Jonathan Chait in that article from New York magazine explained that Obama spoke in a soft Kansas dialect that allowed him to elude the white's racist scrutiny. When he made his Roanoke comments however, they were made with the black street organizers intonations, therefore arousing the white's ire and apprehension concerning the typical black politician's demands for reparations.
What he's up to is far worse than simple reparations. It amounts to an overturning, dismantling, and destruction of all of America's societal structures and customs that have helped make this country great.
