Realpolitik had France supporting some of what we did during the Revolutionary War but mostly to fck with the British and to maintain French controlled territories in the new world. Americans were too insignificant to be considered an ally. LaFayette and a relative handful of French came over to live an adventure but were at best a token force.

Bartholdi had originally tried to sell a variation of the Statue of Liberty to sit at the mouth of the Suez but his buyer was broke. He didn't give up and after a few quick sketches came up with Lady Liberty which after a lot of BS it got dumped on our shores, less of a sign that the French loved us but more of a tribute to Bartholdi's salesmanship.
