An Internet pedophile ring with up to 70,000 members — thought to be the world's largest —has been uncovered by police, a security official said Wednesday.

The European police agency Europol said in a statement that "Operation Rescue" had identified 670 suspects and that 230 abused children in 30 countries had been taken to safety. More children are expected to be found, Europol said.

It said that so far 184 people had been arrested and investigations in some countries were continuing. Most of those detained are suspected of direct involvement in sexually abusing children.

They include teachers, police officers and scout leaders, AP reported. One Spaniard who worked at summer youth camps is suspected of abusing some 100 children over five years.

Europol director Rob Wainwright said Wednesday the ring, which communicated using an Internet forum, was "probably the largest online pedophile network in the world."

"Those who have been members of the site can expect a knock on the door in the very near future," he said.

That number does not surprise me at all. Age of consent is a decided value, set by the society to protect the youth from sexual manipulation. It can be set to 13, 16, 18 or even 50 if the society thinks it is necessary to ensure peoples good life. Law doesn't affect our biology though.

When a female or male of any animal comes to reproductive age, it starts to attract the opposite sex. This is the same with humans. You can't really accuse these individuals who choose to molest teens in their puberty of being "perverse" - No, it is a pure criminal act. Only when they molest children who haven't reached puberty, it becomes a perversion.This is why (imo) we have so much pedophiles, it is not a perversion, but all adults are attracted to - more or less to children between the "age consent" and puberty. Adults who don't understand the necessity of the potective age - or just don't care, will risk it.

I probably typed something politically incorrect there, it is a disturbing thought to consider every adult as a potential pedophile - by their nature. I think most pedophiles aren't "sick" or "abnormal". Scary thought is that they are just like us - their morals are just low.

I'm informed that recently a MOTHER OF AN INFANT here in Bangor Maine was snared in this international pedo-porn roundup.

She was, it is alledged, taking photos of her child as she sexually molested and raped her own child and was then sending this disgusting porn to the pornographers in Germany for money.

When those German's computers were seized, investigators got her as well as other "sources" of porn from around the world.

Now consider this...people around the world conspiring merely to satisfy their perverted lusts...who'd have believe that was even possible?

So the next time somebody comes at you with the theory that there might be an international conspiracy seeking world domination?

You might at least consider that it might just be possible that when the stakes are THAT HIGH, the possibility that there's a vast conspiracy ought to at least be considered.

I'm a Finnish citizen, here the protective age is 16, if I have sex with an 17 year old it is totally legal and acceptable. If I fly to California and have sex with an 17 year old, I'm a pedophile.

What you are saying is that I became a pervert (sexually abnormal) during my flight. I don't think so. Same with an US citizen. If an US citizen, a pedophile goes to Spain where the age of consent is as low as 13, is he "cured" from his perversion?

In these cases it is not about sexual perversion, but it clearly is a criminal matter. No amount of counseling or psychological treatment will cure this individual, there is nothing to cure. This person is a criminal, and he should be sentenced. Any psychological treatment is a waste of time. If people mistake these pedophiles for being perverse, society's funds are being wasted to treat a condition which doesn't exist.

I am in no way defending pedophiles here. What I am saying is that this problem is more complex than just "they are mentally ill, sick individuals". If someone can refute my points, I'm listening.
