NPR: Former CIA Director: No One Told Me Not To Tell Congress
The man who ran the CIA from 2006 through January says he wasn't told by then-vice president Dick Cheney not to brief Congress about a covert program aimed at members of al-Qaida, NPR's Mary Louise Kelly reports.
Panetta and the NYT better have their ducks in a row. So far we have a flesh and blood Hayden on the record vs. "two (unnamed) people with direct knowledge".

Hah, as if this will matter.

The narative is already written, queen nan will be protected and they will blame Uncle fester for everything.

Well, imagine that. But this IS NPR and as such, not really trust worthy.

Do we have a direct quote from Hayden?

Well, if Elmer Fudd is right, then the Times should be held accountable. Until I read it on FOX, I won't believe it. Fair and Balanced....LOL

Or since Hayden never did brief Congress, he's falling on his sword to protect Cheney.

NPR biased AGAINST liberals? Not likely.

1. Then why wasn't Congress briefed?

2. Doesn't this story prove NPR is fair and balanced? Just the fact they ran this story should tell you something. They report both sides. Maybe if you'd listen you would know that. And maybe you need to start hearing both sides so you aren't a brainwashed hack?

3. So anything negative about the GOP, no matter how important or true, makes the media liberal and irrelivent? No wonder Bush got away with everything he did. Any bad news was just written off as liberal drivel. If only you guys were as clever running the government.

It is not only a bit cheeky, but more than a little disingenuous that Hayden should think to advise Obama “personally and forcefully” against investigating illegal activities authorized by President George W. Bush, since Hayden himself might already be described as an unindicted co-conspirator based on publicly available information.

Well, let's daylight this whole sad chapter of our history. Pull all the secret labels, find out what was done to whom, and who was the subject of survelance. And prosecute if laws were broken. Not just the soldiers that did the work, but the people who gave the orders.

Because it wasn't at a point yet where briefing was necessary, or required. It was only in the planning stages, not the funding ones.
2. Doesn't this story prove NPR is fair and balanced?
No, stupid. NPR never ran this story at all. This is from a NPR blogger, if you look.

We have a flesh and Blood Hayden, saying the NYT is lying (again) and all the NYT has is "two anonymous sources."

How about the Dems in Congress who approved and funded everything as well? If we're going to open up the can, let's take the entire lid off and let ALL the contents spill out onto the floor. No cherry-picking.

We shouldn't have a secret government.

And we shall see.

I think the reason Cheney has been so vocal lately is because he knew this and probably other things are going to come out and he's laying the ground work early.

Should have done that before invading iraq.

He was actually responding to scurrilous charges and lies aimed at him from the Obama Menstruation that had nothing to do with the CIA. THEN Queen Nan made the accusation that the CIA lied to her and Congress. THEN, after Pelosi's gaffe had pretty much gone away, the NYT goes after Cheney with "anonymous sources." Cheney's had nothing to say about that. Hasn't even dignified it with a rebuttal. We have heard from Panetta and Hayden on that. Get the timeline straight.

The "groundwork for Iraq" was laid by Dems, starting in 1998 with the Iraq Liberation Act, which made it the law of the land to remove Saddam. The first and only such legislation in our nation's history. Then for the next five years, Dems made more than 100 public statements saying we needed to stop Saddam's WMD program. All but ONE voted for the invasion, and they continued to fund it even when later they lied about their support in order to get elected/re-elected.

And dupes such as yourself still today, ignore the actual record and are mesmerized by the Booooosh demonization.

(e) COORDINATION WITH FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS. - Under direction of the National Security Council and in a manner consistent with section 207 of the Foreign Service Act of 1980 (22 U.S.C. 3927), the Director shall coordinate the relationships between elements of the intelligence community and the intelligence or security services of foreign governments on all matters involving intelligence-related to the national security or involving intelligence acquired through clandestine means.
National Security Act of 1947 (UNCLASSIFIED)

f) USE OF PERSONNEL. - The Director shall, in coordination with the heads of departments and agencies with elements in intelligence community, institute policies and programs within the intelligence community -

What part of that is hard to understand? While I hear democrats in congress making a lot of noise to whip up the base in order to get them behind the staggering number of dismal bills and spending that has been put up so far. If Pelosi who has on a number of occasions stuck her foot in her mouth and has proven a complete lack of ability since taking over congress in 07 along with her counterpart in the Senate goes down a path that where she and the dems in congress wish to take on previous administrations then they set a dangerous precedent that should send a message to the Obama Administration when he leaves office.

Tenet quit; then Goss quit. Cheney finally found his lapdog in Hayden. The amusing part is that anyone can say anything they want, including General Hayden. Who's going to prove him otherwise? Any information regarding the program remains classified.

It was probably a good program and one that, at the time, Congress would have approved of (as well as 99.99% of the American people). I agree that all of Congress should not have been told about it, but the CIA should have at least briefed the Intelligence "Gang of 8."

So where is Cheney? He's been uncharacteristically MIA over this most recent flap.

No. If this were really post-war, then I would agree. But the Afghanistan war is escalating, al-Qaeda is still actively recruiting from Pakistan, Iran is breathing down our necks, and of course Kim Jung Jr. will probably continue popping off threats. It's no time to appear even more vulnerable by exposing any gaping wounds to the rest of the world.
