On subscribing (and unsubscribing) to threads

This is a serious question, why unsubscribe from a thread?

I unsubscribe when the last five or six pages have been nothing but name calling and it doesn't look like there is any hope of reviving the thread.

I thought/think it is automatic when you post in a thread. Then again, maybe there is a box in the User Settings that can be clicked to turn that feature off.

I like the subscription feature and use it all the time to check in on threads I was posting in before, so I wouldn't want to turn it off, but I suppose there are some who don't like it.
