Breakthroughs in science and technology have given NASA scientists enough motivation to consider ambitious projects such as off-world colony construction (i.e., moon bases, international space stations, moon cities, etc.).

On Earth, there has been talk of futuristic communities built with biodegradable plastics and solar panels.

Tennis pros know that the strings of racquets are made with durable materials with fancy names like 'Cat Gut.'

There is therefore a distinct 'culture' of modern design sophistication that really rivals the intellectual and imaginative explosion of the Ancient Greek era, the era of Pythagoras and Plato. Hollywood (USA) has responded by making multiple films, for example, about the modern computing pioneer Steve Jobs.

To build an off-world colony, you need to plan how to manage population, resource sustainability, and labour (if you can get the financing together in the first place and that requires funding and grants from the government and taxpaying citizenry).

The moon is a practical off-world site to consider such ambitious human colony projects, and the International Space Station (ISS) has already given people a sense of intellectual motivation in this area which really began with the formation of NASA and the inception of Star Wars policies of the Reagan administration.

I remember the sci-fi Hollywood (USA) film "The Abyss" [1989] in which human undersea divers/researchers discover a vast intelligent alien city hidden deep in the Earth's oceans. In the recent wake of varied talk about eco-pollution related global warming, everyone seems to be interested in environment exploration and sustainability.

There should be more and more courses in American colleges and universities such as Stanford and MIT that explore off-world colony project viability from a scientific and medical perspective.

How should we talk about this new brain-trust octopus?
