of course this cannot be real, because I remember having arguments right here and being told that the President doesn't interfere or doesn't tell even cabinet level folks what to do in their orgs.....Friday news dump too....

why yes mr. president reducing ozone depletion = smog standards, so close to the background level that Yellowstone Park would have trouble passing is a tad aggressive.

Obama pulls back proposed smog standards in victory for business

By Juliet Eilperin, Updated: Friday, September 2, 9:40 AM

President Obama abruptly pulled back proposed new national smog standards Friday morning, overruling the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts to compel states and communities nationwide to reduce local air pollution in the coming years or face federal penalties.

The move represented a win for the business community, which had lobbied to postpone new restrictions on ground-level ozone — known as smog — until 2013 in light of the economic downturn. It also raised questions about the fate of several other air quality regulations the EPA is preparing to finalize this year.

    snip-

The federal government normally reviews the standards for ground-level ozone — a “primary” standard for public health and a “secondary” one aimed at the environment — every five years. The George W. Bush administration set the primary standard at 75 parts per billion in March 2008, but Jackson chose to revisit the standards early because that level was significantly higher than the 60 to 70 parts per billion recommended by the EPA’s scientific advisory committee at the time.

would anyone be shocked if I told you they have not even completed their study? AND like Obamas comment in Iowa on the Bus tour that the EPA measures cost per reg. and they have not done that either?

I get this mental picture of the Prez spending 3 years to pull all the levers to throw the big socialist revolution into forward motion. And now he's frantically trying to slow the train before it reaches the bridge to nowhere..

These ozone regs end up costing the states much more than they got from the stimulus.. Doesn't cost the EPA very much at all to jockey with a number like 60 and make it a 50..

Its an admission by Obama that he has been wrong, is wrong, and his policies will continue to be wrong for America. At this point, though, he still wants to be president for another five years three and 1/2 months, so he has to make some accomodations with the people, ease back on the regulatory stranglehold his administration has on the economy. After the election has passed, should he win, watchout. Form a mental picture of Lisa Jackson, EPA head, astride the bull romping in the center of the bull ring, the little flat red spot in the ground will be the remains of the late Toreador and the American economy.

(This move is a watershed moment and puts Obama in an inconvenient position with his supporters as follows:)

"The White House announced Friday that it is shelving a major planned Environmental Protection Agency regulation that would have tightened smog standards, dealing a huge blow to environmentalists that had pushed the Obama administration to resist industry pressure to abandon the regulation.

In a statement, President Obama said that the rule is being shelved because he is wary of imposing regulatory burdens during the economic recovery.

When Scott Brown voted to prevent the EPA from regulating certain emissions (not sure if exactly the same as the regulations just dropped by Obama), the “non-partisan” League of Women Voters ran ads against Brown, featuring wheezing and gasping children:"

    and

"CNSNews.com) - During a Democratic fundraising event in San Francisco late last month, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D- Calif.) declared Republicans are ‘hijacking’ the deficit issue in order to ‘destroy the public space’ and wondered aloud “Do their children breathe air?”

An audience member recorded Pelosi’s address at the August 21, 2011 fundraiser where the California Democrat attacked Republicans on the deficit.

“The Republicans right now are using the idea of deficit reduction as an excuse, they’re hijacking an idea that has some resonance, we all want to reduce the deficit, in order to not reduce the deficit but to destroy the public space, destroy government,” Pelosi said"

I for one will give Obama full credit. Allbeit a bit late at least he is now doing the right thing. It's a small step in the right direction but a step in the right direction none the less.

Thank you Obama for finally doing something that will actually help possible future growth. Now stop your bank lawsuits, reverse ocare and lower corporate tax rates to near zero
