Where did this come from?

2011/2012 was supposed to be a rebuilding season. Not expected to make the Big Dance -maybe not even some of the lessor post-season tourneys.

After a rough start - have beaten 6 ranked teams- incl #1 Syracuse -and are solidly entrenched in the rankings.

Just routed West Virginia 71-44 -and they were only favored by 2 points.

Digger Phelps was at courtside doing commentary with ESPN.

Mike Brey's best coaching job??

THE surprise team in Div 1.

Digger had some talent in the late 70's. Ky spanked ND on a regular basis. UK was 14-1 against ND from 1974-1988. That 1977-78 game was a classic. UK had Robey, Phillips, Macy, Givens while ND had Tripucka, Woolridge, and Laimbeer. UK won by only 5 and went on win it all that year.

I remember that. Ky had Ark, Sidney Moncrief in the semis, and had Mich St, Magic Johnson the game before. Listened to Cawood Ledford call that NC game. James Lee for Ky ended it with a dunk but yeah that ND team was really talented.

ND beat UCLA-Wooden teams in 70, 73 but werent that good against basketball-only schools like Kentucky, Duke, Indiana, North Carolina......

I never regarded Michigan St as a "basketball school."

Have had too much success in football over the years.

To be a basketball school you have to utterly suck in football.

There are also "football schools" like USC.

In the top 3 in football titles - yet hasn't even been to the final 4. All while beingin a prime recruiting area. (S. Central LA)
