Nobel economist: Trump’s economy is an absolute disaster for people and the planet

I have been saying this for a long time. Many people know the truth. The 50% of American households who do not own stock are not benefiting from the soring stock market. While the unemployment rate is low, there are still a hell of a lot of people out of work. Many of those who are working have trouble making ends meet and must work several low wage jobs.

Yet, Trump is running on the economy and too many gullible fools, including some who have been left behind, still support him based on this-perhaps his biggest lie.

Nobel economist: Trump’s economy is an absolute disaster for people and the planet

It is becoming conventional wisdom that US President Donald Trump will be tough to beat in November, because, whatever reservations about him voters may have, he has been good for the American economy. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Neither GDP nor the Dow is a good measure of economic performance. Neither tells us what’s happening to ordinary citizens’ living standards or anything about sustainability.

Many households are struggling, and then there is the issue of the environment and our health:

Two years ago, a few rare corporate leaders were concerned about climate change, or upset at Trump’s misogyny and bigotry. Most, however, were celebrating the president’s tax cuts for billionaires and corporations and looking forward to his efforts to deregulate the economy. That would allow businesses to pollute the air more, get more Americans hooked on opioids, entice more children to eat their diabetes-inducing foods, and engage in the sort of financial shenanigans that brought on the 2008 crisis.

Who is willing to say the air and water polution, opiods and diabetes are good things! Get real peopleQ!

Who is willing to say the air and water polution, opiods and diabetes are good things!

We didn't have those under Obama, eh?
Silly twat.
Obama tried to mitigate those problems, Everything that Trump has done exacerbates them

Obama tried to mitigate those problems,

He didn't fix them?

Is it because he was such a weak failure?
Give me a fucking break! Are you completely ignorant of the fact that from the time that the ACA was passed Republicans did everything that they could to undermine it , which detracted from addiction services and much more?

Do you have your head so far up your ass that you do not know that Obama strengthened regulations to protect air a water quality while Trump has bed rolling them back? You are either that stupid, or just lying. Which is it?

You know the ACA was designed to fail, don't you?

Obama strengthened regulations to protect air a water quality

Yeah, he was awesome! DURR

You are aware that every State has agencies to protect their environment.

Obama?? Why are you bringing him up? I didn’t see a mention of him anywhere in the OP.
Obama?? Why are you bringing him up?

Because some whiny twat seemed to be blaming air and water pollution, opioids and diabetes on Trump.

Do you think those weren't issues before Trump?
sure... they’ve been issues for a long time, but what the hell does Obama have to do with anything the OP was talking about?

are you just looking for a partisan squabble?

Obama's "Prize" couldn't cheapen the Prizes in Chemistry, Physics or Medicine.

Move to one of your socialist hell holes if you really want to see pollution.

Wages are doing well. Especially lower end wages.
Horseshit! Show us the numbers. What is "doing well"?

Workers at the lower end of the pay scale finally are getting the most benefit from rising wages

"The recent jump in paychecks has come with an unusual characteristic, as workers at the lower end of the pay scale are getting the greater benefit.

Average hourly earnings rose 3.4 percent in February from the same period a year ago, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report last week. That's the biggest gain since April 2009 and seventh month in a row that compensation has been 3 percent or better.

What has set this rise apart is that it's the first time during an economic recovery that began in mid-2009 that the bottom half of earners are benefiting more than the top half — in fact, about twice as much, according to calculations by Goldman Sachs. The trend began in 2018 and has continued into this year, and could be signaling a stronger economy than many experts think."
OK, I will acknowledge that this-to some degree- contradicts my op. However, a few counterpoints:

1.The article is a year old and we don't know if that trend has continued
2.While low wage earners may have made gains that outpaced the gains of higher wage earners , the gap is still enormous
3. Wages are only part of the story. Investment earnings- which only about 1/2 of American households have- for outpace wages.
4.Corporations are doing fantastically as evidenced by the stock market surge, and from your own post, the growth of income for high end earners is tied to the market

Bottom line is that not everyone is benefiting equally from the economy and nothing in your post refutes that.

There has been no change in the economy or the policies that should have reversed whatever led to those gains in the first place, so it is reasonable to hope the trend has continued.

It is interesting that you counter good news for the working poor, with good news for the middle class and upper class that own investments.

As though good news for them, somehow SUBTRACTS from the good news for the working class.

I see it as more two good things that go great together.

And I want more of both.

And yes, I agree that there are generations of wage stagnation to make up for. So, I want to POUR IT ON, AND LET IT BUILD AND GROW FOR GENERATIONS.

I want to read about how waiters in Manhattan are making 6 figures. I want to read about how chain restaurants are shutting down, because they can't find workers and mom and pop diners are taking that market share.

I want to give power to the people.

I've been in situations as a worker, where I had the leverage. It is a very different and wonderful experience, and I want it for as many of my fellow Americans as can be.

There has never been an economy where everyone benefitted equally. Not once.

"Disaster" is hyperbole. But his hyper-Keynesian approach is dangerous and irresponsible, to say the least.

The amazing thing his how the Trumpsters are just fine with it. A 180-degree spin from where they were just a few years ago.

I've never seen anything like this. These people are completely smitten.

I've been sold on economic nationalism and anti-immigration since Patrick Buchanan back in the 90s.

Republicans have given up on being deficits hawks since before then. Voters don't want to hear about it.

So, your pretense that this is just about Trump, is just not true.

Trump did nothing but research what the people wanted, and then gave it to them.

It only looks like brilliance, because all of the Political Class is insanely stupid.

Let's look at your democrat utopia. California has the among the highest taxes in the US, and might have the highest poverty rate in the US. Utopifornia also has the most environmental regulations, and 7 of the top ten most polluted cities.

Our forum gurus swear up and down that heavy taxation will pay for all their mega programs. They also say regulation is the key to prosperity. The above video shows the failure of both on an epic scale.

Poop and dirty needles on the sidewalks....but at least they reduced CO2.
