*new gt track!* "maybe i'm alright"

Bummer, it would be a bomb career to have for sure. i'd love to spend all day in a full studio a few times a week and just mess around.

when you were doing it did you mainly sample with like an MPC, or did you make your stuff with original instruments?

I used a midi keyboard to tap out all my patterns and play my melodies. I used fruity to sequence it and Acid for recording and mixing full tracks.

I never liked the MPC pads, I like using the keyboard because that's how I know music.

I still play with it, I'm just not doing it professionally anymore. I was one of the biggest rising names in Atlantic City for a while. I was the white dude that everyone wanted to work with

The people I was teamed up with are still doing their thing, they opened a studio in the city. They've had several big names come through just to check it out. Method man and Jada off the top of my head.

I could still pursue it if I wanted to, but I was single back then and had no family or anything, and that's reverse for me now. I don't feel like I fit that lifestyle anymore.

I used Acid for cutting up samples too, Acid is my right hand man pretty much.

I know a good record producer if you are in the Atlanta area.

Do something with ,The Spinner's - I'll be around, next..

I could do something NASTY with that, beat-wise. The intro lends itself to a nice sample to make a lead, and the strings and brass at 2:00 are nice too.

There's not really a great spot in it to take any of the vocal without getting too much of the instrumental in it. Despite what some people think, it's nearly impossible to separate vocals from a mix. You can sometimes get it to clean up enough not to hear it when you use it in a beat, though. I'd have to play with it and see.

I'd want some of those vocals too because it would complete the sample for a hip hop track. The chorus has some good parts that could work with a hip hop track.

GT I'll make a beat with the I'll be Around sample, and I'll throw it to you for vocs.

CRITIQUE IT PAH-LEEZE.

BEAT BY SHADOWVILLE PROD.
LYRICS AND VOCALS BY G.T.

I've got nothing to criticize about your flow or content. Good stuff there. i think you know what you're doing.

About the beat, the wah guitar distracted. I like a beat the works on the subconscious while I'm focusing on the rap, and this one got in the way of that sometimes. It wasn't a terrible beat, i just think your flow deserves better.

That version of a loose hi-hat wasn't doing it for me. This is a drum pattern and sound I'm hearing in my head. Comes in at about 15sec.

You've got a tight flow, so a tighter hi-hat and harder snare would compliment that I think. The bass line is solid.

I wasn't digging the wah guitar that much, but the slide guitar in the first verse could work with some added echo and longer slides, so it sounds something similar to what's going on here.

Those are just some foggy ideas. Everyone's a critic, like they say. Great work, though.

This is what I'm talking about right here, much appreciated advice ^^. I thank you so much man.

I think I need a custom producer to fit my style for me :( but I don't have the dough and if I did have the dough, I'd record myself in a professional setting, also. :(

I was working on making a career out of it until some unexpected bullshit happened to me and changed my course.

i'm still waiting for GT to send me the acapella of this so I can play with it.

Coming right now.

Paulie did you ever make something from the Spinner's sample that Shogun posted?

Yeah I'm still in the middle of it, i've been busy packing and moving over the last two weeks so I haven't had much opportunity to work on it.

I'm just now settled into the new place and back online again so I'll resume shortly.

So far I have a simple base for the drum pattern and some sampling mixed in to carry the beat. I want this to be special and perfect, considering that apparently some important people in the industry may listen to it.

Here's maybe i'm alright over the 21 Questions beat, just for shits and giggles:

I guess it's ok. The beat is too repetitive though, it doesn't have a change up for the chorus. It was just Nate Dogg's vocal part that ran the chorus on the original. So when GT comes in with the chorus it doesn't sound right. Otherwise I think it flows pretty nice over the beat.

ah okay. Cool. Hopefully the move went well. There's probably a lot you can do with the beginning party of that song.

"Some 50 cent fans are dyslexic, their favorite 50 cent song is 12 questions."

Those drums have that kind of snap that I was talking about earlier. Kick pattern works too.

The snap from the drums typically comes from the production. By using compression and EQ properly you can make them a lot punchier in the mix.

It ends up being what sets the good producers apart from the mediocre ones.

That reminds me. This isn't really related to the thread, but I was listening to Homecoming by Kanye last night and I realized that there's not any snare in that song... and I've been listening to that song for like three years

The hit on the beat comes from this kick with some big echo. Cool stuff.
