Named winter storms...where did that come from?

It seems that the National Weather Service doesn't have any part in naming winter storms. It's an invention of the Weather Channel and only the weather channel uses the nomenclature. Will it last?
Guess it is for Weather Channel geeks to talk about amongst each other. Who else would remember Winter Storm Figaro?....................jerst sayin

How on Earth are you going to get people to watch "The Weather Channel" without a little drama?

I'm one of those weather "geeks".

It gives the storms personality. Why should a hurricane or typhoon get a name but not a major winter storm rolling through the midwest?

Plus it just helps facilitate communication regarding the storms.
