It seems that the National Weather Service doesn't have any part in naming winter storms. It's an invention of the Weather Channel and only the weather channel uses the nomenclature. Will it last?

I'm one of those weather "geeks".

It gives the storms personality. Why should a hurricane or typhoon get a name but not a major winter storm rolling through the midwest?

Plus it just helps facilitate communication regarding the storms.

It was created by The Weather Channel in an attempt to drum up more viewership.

I'm no weather expert but it seems that a dip in the jet stream leads to spin-off winter storms. Maybe the weather channel should name dips in the jet stream and cut out the middle man.
