KABUL, Feb 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. military said in a secret report the Taliban, backed by Pakistan, are set to retake control of Afghanistan after NATO-led forces withdraw from the country, raising the prospect of a major failure of western policy after a costly war.
There's the first paragraph.
That is what MIGHT happen
The thread asked what has been achieved
are set to retake control
That sure doesn't sound like "might."
If not having the Taliban in control while we're there blowing up the country, replacing it with a corrupt druglord family, then the Taliban taking control again once the bombing stops is an achievement, then i dunno what an achievement is.
The Taliban happen to live in Afghanistan. It is highly likely that they will have some role in future government. When the west leaves, we will surely provide advisors and hardware to sustain the Afghan military force. It will not go back to the status of pre 9-11 afghanistan
AlQaida was our biggest problem in Afghanistan not the Taliban. It was the Taliban allowing AlQaida free access that caused all the problems. If anything, the Taliban has learned that the western powers will give them another ass kicking if they allow AlQaida cells to operate in afghanisytan
