I think that's the long and the short of it.flux core will always give a ugly surface, but a grinder hides it pretty good,,

You may be on to sometime there.Something else you need to pay attention on is the size and lenth of your cord you are using if on a extension cord. I was having issue with splatter and not good penetration. I was just using a small 25 foot cord. Made a world of difference when I went to a heavy gage contrators 25ft cord.
For what I am doing going from a 50 foot cord to a 25 made big differencein the weld.You may be on to sometime there.
I'm using heavy duty extension cord on a 20 amp breaker ... but I did go out a fair piece. I'll try a shorter heavy duty extension cord. Thanks.
