For years, the Mormon Church’s undergarments have been mocked and misunderstood. Often referred to jokingly as “magic Mormon underwear,” the garb, which resembles a T-shirt and shorts, has been ridiculed on Broadway, referenced in political campaigns and exploited online for profit. That’s why the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) has come forward to explain one of its most sacred Mormon mysteries.

The article makes a good point that they're no more ridiculous or silly than magical talismans like crosses or rosaries.

Jewish prayer shawls can't stop a bullet nor do we say they can - that's the difference. Mormon retailers are on video claiming that about the undergarments. LDS.org itself says,

"The garment, covering the body, is a visual and tactile reminder of these covenants. For many Church members the garment has formed a barrier of protection when the wearer has been faced with temptation. Among other things it symbolizes our deep respect for the laws of God—among them the moral standard."

The lack of professional clergy and scholarship in the LDS community has damaged them. Unfortunately, their efforts to deny what some have advanced/done when they went off the reservation damages the church further IMO. They would be far better off just saying "Those folks who said/did that were kooks--we have them like other churches have them too" than to try to pretend that these things have never been offered up.

Mormon reputation is smudged due to polygany, forced marriage, underage marriage, and expulsion of boys who threaten polyganous men's choice of young brides. Though this is in the FLDS sects, most people don't make the distinction.

Why are the morms suddenly being so forthcoming about something they've been so secretive about in the past?

Ann Romney obviously wears the pants (magic underwear) in that family but still - makes me wonder if Mittens is trying to look a little less freaky leading up to the next general election.

Whatever. He'd just lose again.

Do you remember this slogan?
Verdict due on 'rosaries off my ovaries' T-shirtless.

Is telling Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott to keep his rosaries off a women's ovaries freedom of speech or religious vilification?

Verdict due on rosaries off my ovaries T-shirt

Both, but the catholics ARE the villains.

What is more heinous or more violent than a bunch of supposedly celibate men trying to control women's reproductive rights while boinking alter boys?

Not to mention male radical Republicans.

That is part of it, but even beyond beyond that, the "scholarship", for lack of a better word, regarding the actual Book of Mormon has lead to some very odd interpretations that the mainstream LDS folks like to pretend doesn't exist. Rather than deny it exists and totally reject it, they paint the people referencing it as wrong, lying, misrepresenting, etc.

I wish people did not mock and ridicule the Mormons. It is things like that that make them back peddle. I prefer to simply laugh at them quietly, to myself. That way, they just keep on providing us with free entertainment.
