The Repugs shot themselves in the foot by backing Rubio. Crist is a popular Governor and by forcing him to run as an Independent, the Repugs lost his vote in the Senate.

crist has a 60% approval rating as governor. barring any unforeseen circumstances, at some point, the dems will vote crist rather than allow rubio to win.
