Might curb violence? Can’t do; it’s profiling

A recent article in The Atlantic reveals the mental contortions liberals go through to avoid using effective crime fighting tools.

According to the article “Killer Apps,” a professor and his team of colleagues had developed algorithms that showed promise in identifying Twitter posts that could escalate into violence. But he abandoned the project because it resembled police “profiling.” Translation: Too many of the posts pointed to blacks or other minorities; therefore, the algorithms were racist. You can’t use a “racist” tool even if it could be effective in stopping crime.

It is a slippery slope, sort of like the Minority Report. I can tell you that when people have freedom and opportunity they generwlly don't engage in crime. Those rare career criminals must be addressed but the issue isn't as sinple as either side present it.

The article wasn't about career criminals but about teenagers who kill each other after trading online insults. Spotting the exchanges could have enabled intervention by parents, educators and even social workers, not just police.
