LEHIGH CO. PRIEST ARRESTED ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES


A priest from Lehigh County has been charged with sexual abuse related to possession of child pornography.

Msgr. John S. Mraz, 66, of Bethlehem, is a former pastor at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Emmaus.

According to the Lehigh County district attorney, Mraz came to the attention of investigators earlier this summer, after he asked a friend and parishioner to update two laptop computers.

That person found sexually explicit images of underage boys on both laptops, prosecutors say, and alerted officials from Diocese of Allentown, who passed on the information to the district attorney.

An investigation revealed that Mraz had searched for and downloaded multiple pornographic images of underage boys on multiple devices, prosecutors said.
"As of a result of that analysis, it is alleged the user of the devices actively searched the internet for images and videos of underage males engaged in sex acts," Lehigh County District Attorney James Martin said.

Mraz, who currently lives at a retirement home for priests in Bethlehem, was arrested Tuesday and charged with Sexual Abuse of Children and Criminal Use of Communication Facility, both third degree felonies; and Obscene and Other Sexual Materials and Performances, a first degree misdemeanor.

His attorney urges caution.

"I would ask that people not rush to judgement, oft times they do in these situations with the Catholic Church and things that have happened in the past," defense attorney John Waldron said.

Neighbor Scott Davis, not a parishioner, said the Monsignor seemed a pleasant man, but the allegation of child porn and proximity to school kids is troubling.

"It's a school, all these kids are twelve years old at the most," Davis said.

Some parents want the Church hierarchy to investigate to make sure there had been no inappropriate contact between the defendant and kids.

"Absolutely. With the right person to do it the right, to approach kids the right away, especially young kids," parent Kristin Albright said.

Earlier, the DA emphasized there is no evidence of any improper contact with children.

"That is correct. This is a pornography case at this juncture and I hope it will continue to be just that," Martin said.

But when asked if parents should be worried, he paused, then said, "Certainly if there was any evidence of that or any concerns I would encourage people to come forward and report them to us."

Mraz has been released on bail.

A New York priest who in recent years called for gay Catholics to lead celibate lives to remain in “good standing” with the church has been accused of molesting a 15-year-old boy when he ran a parish in the Bronx in the 80s.

The alleged victim, now 43, came forward to police last month to accuse Father Anthony Giuliano, who now heads a church 85 miles outside Manhattan, of sexually abusing him when he was a member of Giuliano’s parish. Criminal charges are unlikely given that the statute of limitations has already run out. However, church officials indicated that the accusation is “credible.”

The New York Daily News reports:

“The allegation has been found to be credible,” Reverend Gerald Walsh, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York, to parishioners at St. John the Evangelist and St. Charles Borromeo churches, located in Pawling and Dover Plains.

The accuser told Bronx Special Victims Squad detectives that he was working in the rectory of Holy Rosary Church in Baychester between 1987 and 1988 when Giuliano befriended him. The two used to play wrestle, he told cops.

During one session, Giuliano told the teen that he was going to “take him to the back and give him a frontal,” according to police sources.

The teen thought Giuliano was talking about a wrestling maneuver — until the priest told him to lie down on the ground, pulled the teen’s pants and underwear down and molested him, police sources said.

Giuliano reportedly denied that the attack ever took place after the accusations initially surfaced. He told the Daily News, “This is a shock”, and “It never happened.”

Giuliano and his accuser both declined to comment this week.

In 2014, Giuliano did an interview about “Pope Francis and Gay Catholics” in which he said that gay Catholics should be celibate in order to receive communion and that the church would not change its fundamental teaching on the immorality of same-sex marriage.

“It must be a celibate life like with the priesthood,” Giuliano said of gay Catholics. He added, “We are celibate for a greater purpose.”

As for whether the church would ever accept same-sex marriage, Giuliano said, “We can’t say this for 2,000 years and then all of a sudden say, ‘Oh, we made a mistake for 2,000 years.'”
