Finally, it appears someone is actually thinking this stuff through. For a change.

One solution is a public option, which would give Americans the choice to buy into a program run like Medicare. In the past, this idea enjoyed support from both parties. When Republicans passed Medicare Part D in 2003, they included a public option as a fallback for areas with little competition on the private market.

Similarly, Medicare-X revives a public option in our current health care debate. It would use the Medicare provider network, reimbursement schedule, and low administrative cost to deliver a high-quality product at a reasonable price that could be purchased on the individual insurance exchange. Starting in 2020, Medicare-X would become available to every individual in areas with one or fewer private plans on the individual market. By 2023, it would extend to every ZIP code in America. By 2024, Medicare-X would be available for purchase by small businesses.

Medicare-X would cover essential health benefits, including maternity care, pediatric services, preventive health, and emergency room visits. Americans could go online and compare Medicare-X with existing private plans to decide what's best for their families.

Medicare-X would not increase taxes, increase the deficit or touch the Medicare trust fund. Because Medicare does not need to make a profit, pay taxes, or pay fancy salaries for corporate executives, the plan would be affordable. And those who currently qualify for a subsidy under the ACA could use it to bring their premiums down even further.

Sooner or later it would have to raid the general fund or the medicare fund because the rates it would charge would not be enough to cover the costs of all the people joining up. Considering it would be a LOT of sicker people, their premiums wouldn't begin to cover the costs, leaving John Q Taxpayer again subsidizing medical care.

Well you have just described the ACA, another name. Thank goodness for the brains of Democrats.

The main thing its doing is saving the hospitals we have left. The EMTALA should not be used for non emergency care.

At some point, we need to realize that those of us who are paying for health insurance are ALREADY subsidizing those who don't, through higher premiums, co-pays, co-insurance and fees.

What makes it even worse, is the fact that we're paying MORE because those same people ALSO don't have access to preventive and diagnostic services that would catch their problems earlier when they are LESS COSTLY.

And what makes it even worse than THAT, is that we have burdened ourselves and American employers with an incredibly inefficient "system" that actually has SEVEN (7) different health care delivery/payment areas, NONE of which communicate directly with the other:
  1. Individual (ACA)
  2. Group
  3. VA
  4. Medicare
  5. Medicaid
  6. Worker's Comp
  7. Indigent
This is madness, there is no excuse for it outside of shallow political ideology, and there are answers for it, already in place and functioning well.

Under the ACA and expanded Medicaid they have access to preventative care, before it they did not , just ER care.

If they take away the mandate expect your insurance to even go higher.

So this seems to be true with the Post office, PBR, Amtrack, and just about everything else the government runs.

A user subsidy tax to help finance a service is great, but as long as it is not compulsary and doesnt not run into ridiculous deficits I am fine with it.
