America
It seems those socialistic European and Asian nations raise smarter children than America? How could that be, are we not a freedom loving nation of educated people? When Americans blame each other for our nations' dumbness, they must be missing something. What could it be? Is it any wonder we have the congress we have.

Keep your eye on the ball.

The greatness of America is that ANYONE can succeed, regardless of where they come from, what their ethnicity is, or what they look like. Despite what "Progressives" are trying to accomplish with Government for the past 80 years, our governments have not made the commitment to provide cradle-to-grave security for every individual.

And thus, we have a large underclass who are minimally intelligent and talented, make disastrous life choices, and depend on Government for food, clothing, shelter, and healthcare.

And it is this latter group - growing larger at a faster clip than the so-called, "middle class" - that weighs down our statistical profile. But looking at it rationally, the poor AVERAGE test scores and whatnot are offset by the amazing accomplishments from the "top of the Bell Curve" who are inventing things, creating new businesses, creating new products and business models, and so on. It's not for nothing that foreigners flock to American universities, and when foreigners are asked where they would rather live (than their native country), the U.S. is by far the country of choice.

So you can say that the socialist countries of Asia and Western Europe raise "smarter" children, and I would only point out that Americans of the same ethnicities (Germans, Swedes, Japanese, Koreans, etc) are doing JUST AS WELL in the U.S. as they are in Europe and Asia. But those vaunted countries do not have the American demographic issues that skew our averages downward.

Statistic are like the Bible: you can find whatever you want to find in them, depending on where you look and how thorough you are.

Liberal social policies of the late 60's and through the 1970's literally doomed minorities in this country.
Generational poverty, moral and family decline is a direct result of the cradle to grave philosophies of the progressives during this period.
It is now 2013...and minorities are still critically behind the rest of America in every category but crime and fatherless children. And is showing no signs of improvement still due to the dependent class created by the left.
And then for the blind idealist like midcan to say it is because of Republicans is so incredibly dumb and shallow it boggles the mind.

This lefty minority married his women and had children, worked hard for 37 years and devoted my life to my children. Went too college, served honorably in the military and am now semi-retired on 43 acres. Stick that in yer pipe and smoke it. My minority status is that of Native American.
There is no such thing as cradle to grave in the 1960's and '70's, we starved like everyone else when bread winners could not earn money due to illness or unemployment.

The worst thing you can do for somebody is to guarantee them a lifetime subsistence level of income for free. And that is true whether you are talking about welfare recipients or rich trust fund babies. These are the most worthless fuckers in any society.

I wonder how badly those results are skewed because of our school populations. I mean, if we keep kids in schools who have no desire to be there and just don't care, it drags everyone down.

I'm almost thinking we should make high school optional. If you don't want to go, don't go and let us use the resources on kids who want to learn.

If there is any need to wonder why Americans do so poorly in education you must look at our culture and what we admire. Or should I say what many admire.

But first consider the mindless rants from the right above. It is always government and dependent people who are the cause of everything or just about everything. Has anyone of the braindead rightwing wondered about how this is even possible?

The few Americans dependent on government are usually children or the elderly. Education can take place in many ways but the testing and the levels of knowledge is done on students - not the elderly nor small children. Did any of you wingnuts read the ages involved.

The dumbing down of America has nothing to do with government it has to do with Americans and their values. They value money and sports and celebrity. None require education. Americans do not support nor praise education - consider the many cliches. And finally Americans are just plain stupid (in science) when creationism is taught, books are censored, global warming is still debated, home schooling is considered education, and liberal arts learning is considered irrelevant.

Just as Moonglow noted above, I too am far ahead of most on that imaginary food chain, I do not brag, I just want everyone up here. Liberals succeed because they are open to life and its promise. Whining about government doesn't suit us. Whining ain't ever done nuttin last I checked.

"Quite possibly, this belief in our own opinion, regardless of the facts, may be what separates us from the nations of the world, what makes us unique in God’s eyes. The average German or Czech, though possibly no less ignorant than his American counterpart, will probably consider the possibility that someone who has spent his life studying something may have an opinion worth considering. Not the American. Although perfectly willing to recognize expertise in basketball, for example, or refrigerator repair, when it comes to the realm of ideas, all folks (and their opinions) are suddenly equal. Thus evolution is a damned lie, global warming a liberal hoax, and Republicans care about people like you." Mark Slouka quoted from Harper's Magazine

and like i said above....you will go out and vote the same people over and over no matter what ..in your case.....JUST BECAUSE they are Democrats....

this country is broken...we need education education education

The country is not broken, it is merely saddled with a completely corrupt and incompetent administration at the moment. American education is the best in the world.

this country is broken...we need education education education

Should schools teach what they believe is new and up to date or should schools teach what the parents of their students learned when they went to school?

I did not expect nor did I get a substantive counterpoint from the right wing peanut gallery, that is normal. It's always someone else who is causing the problems, never the image in the mirror. Look only at a congress that pays itself well while it takes food from the mouths of needy children and reasons that that is right and proper. When your thought process can do that, you can excuse and justify anything. Check out book in link below if you'd like a challenge to thought today.

Yeah well..those outcomes are what happens when your society fights an undeclared war on the educated.

Note how often we read on this board about what losers all teachers are?

Those posters reflect the general attitude about education and educators in this society.

Societies that do not value things generally do not have good outcomes about those things they do not care about.

The stupendous levels of sheer ignorance and minformation I see posted here is enough to make an educated person weap for this society.

Really folks, some of our fellow posters here are proud of their ignorance.

WE're currently in one of America's KNOW NOTHING periods...marked as usual by:

1. Contempt for education and educators and the educated

2. A myth that common sense is worth more than education and the more one is educated the less common sense one will have

3. Xenophobia -- FEAR of immigrants, people of other religions, races, and generally the "other"

4. Religious revivalism in all its twssted and perverse guises

Study: US Education Spending Tops Global List

Despite the spending, U.S. students still trail their rivals on international tests.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development – which groups the world's most developed countries – writes in its annual education report that brand-new and experienced teachers alike in the United States out-earn most of their counterparts around the globe. But U.S. salaries have not risen at the same pace as other nations and the United States is one of the few places where overall education spending has fallen since the economic crisis hit in 2008.

The findings, part of a 440-page report, put the United States' spending on its young people in context.

The United States spent more than $11,000 per elementary student in 2010 and more than $12,000 per high school student. When researchers factored in the cost for programs after high school education such as college or vocational training, the United States spent $15,171 on each young person in the system – more than any other nation covered in the report.

That sum was slightly higher than some developed countries and it far surpassed others. Switzerland's total spending per student was $14,922 while Mexico averaged $2,993 in 2010. The average OECD nation spent $9,313 per young person.

As a share of its economy, the United States spent more than the average country in the survey. In 2010, the United States spent 7.3 percent of its gross domestic product on education, compared with the 6.3 percent average of other countries in that organization of the world's most developed countries. Denmark topped the list on that measure with 8 percent of its gross domestic product going toward education.

We spend more than any country in the world on education..........

Yet the world does better on tests than we do.................

What is the usual Lib Response, throw more money at it when it's not the problem..........
