Marines Case Stokes Italy-India Tensions - Corriere.itThe Indian supreme court has rejected appeals by Salvatore Girone and Massimiliano Latorre, the two marines detained in India for almost three years. When asked in Parliament to clarify the situation, the Italian premier Matteo Renzi promised a government report on the issue today [Wednesday]. Centre-right politicians were critical and the League called for a raid by special forces to reclaim the two men. Federica Mogherini, the EU’s high representative for foreign policy, expressed disappointment, saying that the Indian supreme court ruling on the two marines “has dashed expectations for a long-awaited solution by common accord” and “could affect EU-India relations and the global fight against piracy to which the EU is strongly committed”. Later in the day, the government raised its tone: “It is a grave decision that we were not expecting. We stand by our servicemen and will now consider how to respond”, said defence minister Roberta Pinotti on a peak-time RAIUno talkshow. “Massimiliano Latorre needs to be treated here in Italy, the doctors tell us, so I don’t see how he can go back to India. We will not shift from this position”.
You either have evidence or you don't. Three years is a hell of a long time.
