Charges in crash draw ire

The wife of a North Las Vegas maintenance worker lashed out Wednesday at the motorist who crashed a car into her husband and caused him to lose both of his legs.

Nancy Borruto said the two misdemeanor charges against the driver, Jesus Cervantes Cano, offer weak potential punishments -- a maximum of one year in jail, if convicted -- for such a catastrophic act.

"He is going to walk away with just a misdemeanor when he (her husband) can't walk away because he lost both his legs," Nancy Borruto said while standing in front of University Medical Center's Trauma Center, where her husband, 48-year-old Anthony Borruto, is recovering.

Borruto, a maintenance worker for the city's Parks and Recreation Department, was injured Tuesday while working in the 2100 block of Bassler Street, next to Kneip Park.

North Las Vegas police said Cano, 20, might have been eating about 5:53 a.m. when his 1990 Pontiac drifted to the right, pinning Borruto between the car and a pickup.

Borruto was listed in critical condition Wednesday, but was conscious and alert, his wife said.

"He's very angry, but he's doing well," Nancy Borruto said, noting her husband recalls nothing about the accident. "We're very happy that he's alive."

Cano, meanwhile, was being housed Wednesday afternoon at the North Las Vegas Detention Center, where a judge had set his bail at $10,000.

Cano is charged with failure to pay full time attention to driving, and driving without a driver's license, according to police spokesman Tim Bedwell.

Cano showed police what appeared to be a fake driver's license from Mexico, but local authorities will not charge him for the license in question, Bedwell said.

Bedwell said he did not know whether Cano was an illegal immigrant, and he was unaware of whether federal immigration officials will review Cano's case to verify his citizenship status.

Nancy Borruto said her husband, the father of three, intends to return to his job once rehabilitated.

He IS an illegal, but as in most cases such as this in the US, the media will not label him illegal. Even now, they are only calling him an "undocumented" worker in the local media.

What does this guy being "illegal" have to do with this tragedy? :dunno:

Well, perhaps if he wasn't here illegally, this would never have happened in the first place. Secondly, he was arrested, known to be illegal, yet released. Also, why does the media continue to refer to illegals as "undocumented"? Call them what they are - illegal aliens - not undocumented workers/residents/citizens.

Duh! :duh3:

Maybe because all the people who hire them are a bit scared of paying money to something that's illegal. It has a nasty ring to it.
