Lost more ground to living expenses versus pay

I just got the news. My rent and part of my Utilities are going up another 30 bucks as of the first of the year. Meanwhile, my heating bill has been going up slowly. My Insurance for my vehicle has gone up. Food prices have gone up and continue to rise. All in all, the total adjustment will be in the excess of over 100 bucks. And then it also bumps me into a higher tax bracket as well.

That means that the COLA of 48 bucks a month doesn't cover the increases once again. Okay, I can afford it. But let's look at the ones on just SSI.

With the Rent and Utilities going up that 30 bucks for a total of 405 bucks for a long term RV Space the size of a postage stamp, versus a 1200 buck SSI check max down to 667 bucks on the low side, add in the other costs, where does that leave the people unable to work due to age and injuries. These people paid into SSI and Medicare their whole adult lives. And they are finding out the programs they were depending on are either being short changed or cut out completely. Now they are being told that they are freeloaders and shunned by one group of people. Guess what, most of these people did the shunning themselves. The Food Banks, Free Lunch Programs, used clothing programs and more from the community is drying up slowly.

There are many "Welfare" programs that they can utilize including housing but those are on the chopping blocks as well. You won't see them on here complaining about it. They can't afford a computer, much less internet access. Most only use throw away 19.95 phones with no internet access. Their life is difficult to say the least. But some want to make it even worse and are in the process of doing just that.

I have been slipping for a couple decades from Middle Class to lower middle class with no change in my financial status. But these folks have gone from poor to poverty with no change in their financial status.

Cola is directly attached to the Growth. No Growth, no Cola. If the nation is in a recession, there is a negative growth, there will be a negative growth and a zero Cola allowance.

Okay, Rumpster, listen up. It's not the Cola that's the problem. It's the Rich People that are just grabbing a bigger piece of the pie with little or no regard to the average peoples lives. Yes, the "Average" numbers show an increase but those numbers don't show the real story. When the Rich shows such a huge gain and the average person goes backward little by little, the average number will show an increase. And that is the number you keep harping about.

This isn't a Rump or Obama problem. It's a problem of our entire Government being bought, paid for and controlled by these rich people who show total disregard to America.
You are an asshole-learn how things work. Social security is based on the per cent growth of urban manufacturing wages, which did not grow under Obama since he killed manufacturing. Trump brought it back and we got cost of living raises due to THAT. Has nothing to do with the rich. And if you call a man a liar, be ready to rumble-I don't take that shit from anybody.

I didn't call you a liar then. But you have lived up to that title now. I proved that COLA, did in fact, happen under Obama and explained why it didn't happen in certain years and why. How it was linked to the growth. Why two of the years of the worst recession we had zero COLA. But it gets in the way of your BS Liar Rant. Sorry bout that, liar.

According to non biased reports the average family income increased 5000.

That's the average. The Average is made up using the Richest and the Poorest where the Richest skews the figures hard. In this case, the Poorest got proportionately poorer while the Rich got proportionately richer. If you hadn't noticed, the gap between the poor and middle class has been slipping as compared to the rich for decades but the average has been slowly going up. So your statement is mathematically correct but it's just part of the equation.

The rich are always going to do better. That is the nature of life. The secret is to allow everyone to do better. That has happened under trump better than any president since I have been alive.

If that were the case, then the disparity between the lesser financial beings versus the better off beings wouldn't continue to grow at such a disparity. But it's actually increased. And it's been increasing regardless who has been President. You want to give Rump the credit for making it better? Fine, let's give him credit for the better offs doing better but you will also have to give him credit for the not so better offs doing so much worse off. But Rump really didn't have that much to do with any of it.; I will admit that he has had a huge affect on one bunch doing much, much better in the last 3 years but that would be the Rumps.

Yes, it will. The economy of scale makes that happen. Once a rich person gets to a certain level they are going to accelerate the speed with which their wealth grows.

The only way to stop that is to kill them. You want to do that now?

What I want to do is to put a limit on how poor a person can get. I see people in my area that are worried about where their next daily meal (not next meal) will come from. To worry about eating once a day should be found as criminal. And I am not talking about a well balanced meal either. Or worrying about heating themselves when the temp drops below freezing to a nice balmy zero degrees. Doing without a life threatening prescription so that their children can eat that once in a day meal. And these people have JOBS. They depend on the School Lunch Assistance Program and to have that removed only means that their children will learn at a slower or lower rate than other children. All of this should be criminal. Poverty should be criminal and treated as such. And if a tax on the higher, wealthier people can take some of this pain and suffering away from it then we need to do just that. This isn't Socialism, it's doing what is right.

I am so sick of "I got mine" mentality.

I am truly sorry to hear that. But I have to also say that SSI was never intended to be the sole source for retirement income. Or am I wrong about that?
Yes that's true, but the last I read over two thirds of the folks receiving Social Security rely on it as their sole source of income. That's the reality of it.

^^^^^!

Except for those born with crippling physical and or mental issues or people crippled by accident, where you are right now is the result of the financial decisions you've made over the course of your life. Fail to "act your wage" for 50 years, don't be suddenly shocked you can't make ends meet.

It's no secret you're going to get old and eventually stop working. You have your whole life to prepare for that event. SSI is a small buffer to help those who are less prepared.

Time is the most critical element of saving and investing. Teach that to the young. Live below your means and always put a little away every paycheck. For the first few years, there won't be much to show but a habit has been established. After a couple of decades, you've got a war chest to take pride in. A decade or two later, due to the size of your portfolio, the returns will take off like a rocket. Reinvest them back into your war chest and watch it grow even faster.

If you failed to plan for your future, use yourself as an example to young people. Plead with them not to end up like you. Save and invest early. "Act your wage." Don't borrow. Save up for what you want. Loan interest = stupid tax.

Fully fund your own retirement as if you will never see a cent of SSI.

The way you limit how poor people can get is by making it possible for everyone to get rich. Our poorest 10% of the population is in the wealthiest 1% of the worlds population. Instead of trying to get everyone rich, you try and make the rich not so rich, which results in harm to the middle class. That is backasswards thinking.

I saw a study where they asked people if a tax break meant their next door neighbor made 25,000 dollars more, and they made 1,000 more (or something in that range) would they want the tax break. The overwhelming response was no. They couldn't stand that someone would do much better than them, even though they would get more of their own money back too.

Mind boggling.

How Not To Be Poor - Capitalism Magazine

Avoiding long-term poverty is not rocket science. First, graduate from high school. Second, get married before you have children, and stay married. Third, work at any kind of job, even one that starts out paying the minimum wage. And, finally, avoid engaging in criminal behavior.

Not rocket science

They can't afford a computer, much less internet access. Most only use throw away 19.95 phones with no internet access. Their life is difficult to say the least. But some want to make it even worse and are in the process of doing just that.

I have been slipping for a couple decades from Middle Class to lower middle class with no change in my financial status. But these folks have gone from poor to poverty with no change in their financial status.

That's what you get when you don't own your own home

Poor people are so dumb. They all think a "smart phone" is a necessity.

It isn't. You can save a bundle, keep yourself and your meta data safe by just not having one.

Also, save up, and pay all your big bills at once. Poor people have notoriously bad spending habits. They will pay their insurance monthly rather than annually or bi-annually. What a waste. There's 200-300 in annual savings right there.

They self medicate with cigarettes and booze, then wonder why they can't afford to pay the utilities on time, then bam, get late fees here and there tacked on, eventually adding an extra $50 dollars to the monthly budget.

. . . for the healthy ones? It is no wonder they landed in the poor house.

And where do you go to get that WIFI if you can't afford that convoluted coffee at the coffee shop? Most 19.95 plans don't include Internet so you have to use a hotspot to have WIFI. And, trust me, when you have a business offering WIFI, the last thing you want is a bunch of poor people taking up space sucking up your WIFI instead of paying customers.
