I tend to think it's nears 50/50 and the next
Dem Presidential nominee WILL be the tell.

I agree about this election being a good indicator. What do you think about the effects of all the rhetoric. When the Right paints all Lefties as Anti American Commies... do you think that helps the situation? What does that do to the old liberals that you mentioned?

I believe the 'culture cancel' of the new left marginalizes the old liberals while supporting the anti-AMERICAN rhetoric from the right.
It's the main issue that the Democrats fail to resolve and will lead to a Trump re-election.
Afterall, Trump won the electoral college in 2016 due to Dem 'secret voters' and may very well repeat again.

So is the tactic to define all lefties as members of the extreme “new lefties” as you call them in an attempt to alienate old lefties and paint them as insignificant?

No.
It's actually an appeal to older lefties that your vote IS personal and secret, as it should be and that the New Left has totally deserted many of the cherished American values that they still adhere to.
In that regard, they are highly significant.

they are significant but I disagree with the tactic of clumping all lefties together. Many on the left oppose the socialist agenda. So calling those people socialists does not make sense. We are seeing it right now in the dem primary as the lines get drawn. If we could be grown ups and just talk about issues and smart solutions instead of the absolutist team sport propaganda that both sides peddle in then We would be much better off.

In my retirement community, I do not clump all Democrats together as lefties.
Many support Trump.

To be honest I’ve seen enough to consider him poison for our country. I was a fan of his before he ran for office but I was raised to believe in principles of character, integrity and honesty and I just haven’t seen that from him. I realize he is unfairly attacked all the time but the way he handles it along with any opposition just turns my stomach. We can’t even talk policy anymore because it’s turned into a mud slinging and character assassination game.

I understand the appeal of trump. Am friends with many Trump supporters. I don’t think people who support him are evil. I just think we can do much better and hope we do so as a collective next election.
