Qatar has been in the news for decades and has become 'enigmatic' in respect to the pronunciation of its name, which has seen tens of thousands, perhaps millions, of newscaster's, government officials, and ordinary folks choke while trying to pronounce it since it came onto the scene.

This evening on the "Eleventh Hour" show on MSNBC General McCaffrey actually pronounced the name correctly: "Gutter".

No, it's pronounced 'cutter'.

And you wonder why your image is matching that of Piss Pants in its downward spiral .

Try , Khuttar .

It has been hilarious.

Western throats just cannot say the "Q" without a lot of training and need to just accept this. You have to try to swallow your tongue to do it.

Just for you.

"You will find most people pronounce Qatar like “cuttur”, “kuh-tar” or “cat-ar”, and while “cuttur”, or “guttur”, is closest to the Arabic pronunciation, Qatar Airways (which is state-owned) uses the latter pronunciation. Confusing, eh?"

Of course, you can pronounce it anyway you want, luiza. Nowhere did I suggest that anyone has to pronounce it correctly. ;)

I used to work with a lovely American woman who was married to a man from Qatar and they both pronounced the word differently.

They stayed married.
