Really doesn't matter, NY wouldn't execute him anyway. Imagine if an American went to his country and did what this man did in this one. You'd rightly walk to the gallows.

CNN —
A terrorist convicted of committing a 2017 attack for ISIS that killed eight on a New York City bike path will serve life in prison after a jury said Monday it could not reach a unanimous decision on the death penalty.

Sayfullo Saipov effectively learned his sentence when the jury in the penalty phase of his trial in Manhattan federal court told a judge that it was unable to reach an undivided decision favoring the death penalty on any of the nine capital counts it was asked to consider.

NYC bike path terror suspect found guilty on all counts in killing of 8 people
A unanimous decision would have been required to sentence Saipov to death in the first death penalty trial under the Biden administration. Absent the death penalty, the statutorily mandated sentence for the convictions is life in prison, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York said.

Yeah, Democrats are really stupid like that. They think they should spend millions to incarcerate him for decades, rather than give him the justice that he really deserves. :dunno:

NY State doesn't have a valid Death Penalty Statue, he was charged under federal law. But the jury if from the NY area, so one bleeding heart stopped this moron from getting his needle.

At least they plan on sending his ass to a SuperMax facility.

With the death penalty, what goes around, comes around.

This is foreign policy being played out in the interests of Americans travelling abroad.

There is only one Supermax in the U.S., in Florence, Colorado. We should consider building another, as people who go there never get out. The terrorist from Boston was early 20's when he went in.

a lot of lefties want to close the existing one as "inhumane"

So then this will be attempted again.... buckle up New Yorkers....

Such killers rarely get the DP anywhere.

It costs less to keep him in prison for the rest of this life, than to go through the legal process to execute him. Even the cost of a death penalty trial is double the cost of a regular criminal trial.

A lot of people want to do a lot of things.

Only because the people who don't like the death penalty draw the process out as long as possible.

Sorry, but a side can't be the cause of the cost of something then bitch about the cost.

Well that's not true. There are Constitutional rights involved here. The original idea was that capital punishment wasn't supposed to be easy. And over the years there have been so many cases where people were executed for crimes they didn't commit, based on coerced testimony or manufactured evidence, such due diligence is certainly warranted.

We don't want to give the government the ability to kill too people easily. Do you really trust the government and the justice system not to abuse this power, when they've abused every other power they've ever been given?

There is appealing, and then there is appealing every little thing to INENTIONALLY make the process as drawn out as possible, thus giving another reason, i.e. the cost, for DP opponents to complain about.

Most of the appeals don't even revolve around the facts of the case, or the guilt of the party in question. They are mostly technicalities, or pleas for mercy due to the upbringing of the criminal in question. Throw in the appeals based on the method of execution that are re-hashed EVERY SINGLE CASE and that's why these things cost what they do.

Again, you can't complain about the cost when your side is DELIBERATELY increasing the costs by orders of magnitude via "throw spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks" appeals of dubious merit, that clog the system and take a 10 year process (plenty of time to figure things out and turn it into a 20 year or more process.

Again, your ignoring the obvious: You want to give the STATE government the right to decide whether you live or die, and limit your time frame to appeal. A state representative just said that that the government should start hanging criminals from trees.

These are the same people trying to attach the death penalty to abortion providers.

As for your complaints about the appeal process, there are limits on what you can appeal. You can only appeal whether the trial was properly conducted - what you called "technical grounds", but the appeal process precludes introducing new evidence or witnesses.

Actually it's given to the State Judiciary system AND a jury of the accused's peers.

The issue isn't a time limit, it's dismissing out of hand bogus appeals that have nothing to do with the guilt of the criminal.

Again, you can complain the DP is immoral, or isn't a deterrent, but arguing it costs too much when it's your opposition that is driving up the cost is dishonest at best, and outright fraud at worst.
