Judge: Special counsel had authority to prosecute Manafort

"A federal judge in Washington ruled Tuesday that special counsel Robert Mueller was working within his authority when he brought charges against President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman.

The decision was a setback for Paul Manafort in his defense against charges of money-laundering conspiracy, false statements and acting as an unregistered foreign agent. Manafort had argued that Mueller had exceeded his authority because the case was unrelated to Russian election interference.

But U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson disagreed, siding with prosecutors who had produced an August 2017 memo from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. The memo shows Rosenstein authorized Mueller to investigate Manafort's Ukrainian work and related financial crimes.

Jackson had previously thrown out a civil case Manafort brought challenging Mueller's authority.


Peter Carr, a spokesman for the special counsel's office, declined to comment.

The decision allows one of two criminal cases against Manafort to proceed.

In addition to the Washington indictment, Manafort also faces charges in Virginia of bank fraud and tax evasion. The Virginia indictment accuses him of hiding tens of millions of dollars he earned advising pro-Russia politicians in Ukraine from 2006 through 2015. It also accuses him of fraudulently obtaining millions in loans from financial institutions including while he worked for the Trump campaign."

Remember all parties are considered innocent until proven guilty or otherwise within a timely manner, and they and their lawyers are presented with any and all information that is being discovered in the investigation in order to mount their defense against such discovery.

One year for an allegation of collusion ?? Kidding me right ? If anything he has outted the FBI and others for the sorry lot of leaders that they were in all of this, and he is dragging everyone into the cesspool as he attempts to formulate something that wasn't never there to begin with.

So far, everyone Mueller has charged, has plead guilty, except Manafort and the Russians, so I’m guessing that Mueller must have had pretty compelling evidence against them. Flynn, Gates, Papadopoulos, the Dutch lawyer currently in jail, and the west coast guy who helped the Russians steal identities - all guilty.

It’s disingenuous to say Mueller has nothing, because obviously he does. And Trump wouldn’t be shitting himself daily on Twitter if he didn’t.

I know the op was speaking about Manafort, but it just brought into focus the entire bullcrap going on, and how much bias is evident in this tragic American story we've all had to put up with. Yes, it has turned into a kangaroo court at this point and time.

If Manafort wasn't connected to the case for Russia collusion, then how was Mueller justified in doing anything to or against Manafort under the guidelines of the probe into collusion ?? I can understand if Mueller stumbled across something while checking records or questioning a possible suspect in the case, otherwise to then refer that matter to the DOJ for further investigation into the suspect as an unrelated matter not related to the case at hand.

Mueller has no right what so ever to go off track from the original charge given him by those who had appointed him to investigate the specific charge of collusion. No collusion, no charge. The taxpayers deserve better than the corruption that we are dealing with in Washington, and our tax money should be used in a more transparent way than this crock of bullcrap that is going on.

Mueller isn't in charge of the DOJ, the FBI, the Supreme Court nor should he be. He has been appointed to investigate a charge of collusion based on his prior service as an investigator, and if stumbles across anything unrelated to his specific charge, he then must refer that to the justice Dept for them to investigate the matter as a separate issue as was found in which is again unrelated to the original charge Mueller had been appointed to investigate.

Allowing the rules to be bent or broken all due to a probe that has been constructed out of a butt hurt political witch hunt based on false allegations, wild accusations, bad politics, and the biggest of all "the liberal leftist loss of their queen" has been something else to see and witness in our time.

Ellis is in Virginia................and he stated the truth about what's going on.............and I agreed with what he had to say.

Even in that court..............charges will still proceed............but some may be in a lesser court. He challenged the scope of the special prosecutor...........and rightfully so...............

It is plainly obvious that the plan is to legally attack anyone near Trump..........and it is politically motivated by the same ones who exonerated Hillary before she and other key witnesses testified.

The system will get their pound of flesh...........but there will be return fire in an EYE FOR AN EYE political shitstorm.

Yes, the judge challenged the scope of the special prosecuter, but when he was shown the evidence that the investigation was well within it's scope, he followed the law, and withdrew his challenge. Nothing changes except the judge's mind on that particular subject.
You can claim there is a plan to attack anyone near Trump, or is politically motovated, but nothing has been done that wasn't strictly within the scope of the investigation. Mueller is dotting all the I's and crossing all the T's.
I'm not sure how there might be any return fire unless the right is willing to ignore the laws to do that. Looks like all you can do is pout.
