I saw his 1979 version of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment and when he played a gay guy in the 1982 movie Partners and Midnight Express (which has gay content). Very talented.

Actor John Hurt, the gravelly voiced British actor who garnered Oscar nominations for his roles in "Midnight Express" and "The Elephant Man," has died at the age of 77, publicist Charles McDonald said Friday. McDonald offered no other details of Hurt's passing.
