...or at least his teachings seem to be considerably more consistent with socialist ideology than capitalist ideology.

So how come there aren't more Christian socialists?

What.. you didn't know about that 5% markup on every fish and loaf at the sermon on the mount?

Actually, this is a decent question considering the source. My answer is that many, many christians use dogma for the sake of validating a personal identity rather than any real application of the words of jebus. Pharisee christians, in other words. always looking for a loophole to rationalize what they want to do rather than what their bible tells them to behave. Watching otherwise self-identified christians bitch about the lower class and welfare never becomes less ironic than it is.

I had read somewhere that Jesus referred to helping the poor several hundred times and condemned homosexuality only once.

Don't know if its true or not, but it would probably mean Jesus is more a socialist.

the tricky thing about gods and messiahs.. we read into them what we want to take and insist that our interpretations are direct conversations. I choose to think that jebus represented a better idea and a message of peace, forgiveness and hope. OT non-witstanding, of course. I'm a bigger fan of the forgiver than the vengeful god of the bible. Then again, it's all a work of fiction to me so...

It's a little more complicated than it appears. For one things, socialists are anti-religion. Which explains why there aren't many Christian socialists. They despise religion, particularly Christianity, because Christianity focuses on the individual...individual responsibility, individual relationship with God, and the uniqueness and sanctity of each individual life. Doesn't sound like anything a good socialist would swallow. In addition, Jesus admonished his followers to treat everyone with love. I haven't seen many socialists that went THAT far.

He also admonished his followers to be obedient to their government, whatever government that might be, so long as they didn't compromise their Christianity by doing so..

Sounds simple, but give it some thought and you'll see it's not.

Suffice it to say that Jesus admonished his followers to treat everyone with love. I haven't seen many socialists that went THAT far.

are you fucking kidding me? what ELSE is the purpose of welfare but to love the humanity that can't afford to attend your megachurch? What OTHER correlation can you draw between socialism and actual teachings of jebus?

He also admonished his followers to be obedient to their government, whatever government that might be, so long as they didn't compromise their Christianity by doing so.

I'm pretty sure that's not what the lesson was from the "give unto ceasar" verse.... In fact, it's exactly this kind of path to rationalizing that jebus sidestepped when addressing the, uh, pharisee. Jesus never told you that your conquest was the physical world. He never said that you should conquer governments for the sake of his word. His was supposed to be a greater promise than simply worldly authority. And, I mean, we all know what happened to Rome once the christians took over.

Because Christians believe in taking personal responsibility for the poor. They don't foist it on the government then pat themselves on the back for a job well done.

uh, because it was the MASSES of listeners and NOT JEBUS that distrbuted fishes and loaves.. suuuuuuuuure. Personal responsibility my ass. Sure, if one meets the dogma junky criteria. Ironic as hell that you talk about foisting something at the government and then mention back patting this side of the 04 evangelical punchline, eh?

Yes, silly me.. jebus sure did say "Lo, and I spake unto you. Fuck the poor if they cannot find a christian to take from. Ceasar doeth not represent the same good will that I ameth talking about when he feeds the poor in rome. No, that which is foisteth upon the government, though good deeds still, are not worthy of my consideration"

yes.. I fogot about that part.

:cuckoo:

If welfare proponents were more Christian, we wouldn't need welfare.

uh, because there have been no point in hisotry where MASSES of poverty stricken populations were, uh, christian...

slow day, eh dingdong?

what a goofy statement. your god must be proud.

Check the stats. Christians give more than seculars.

by sheer volume alone.. not to mention, again, as long as the reciever fits the accepted criteria. Shall I post links to news sources where christian cherity organizations refused to play ball with someone who is gay or of the "wrong" faith? charity for the sake of perpetuating chritianity is probably EXACTLY what ole jebus was talking about!

dingdong.
