Hope you don't mind if I'm a butinsky, ag workers don't make much and only work seasonal except for a few. Many are now drawing welfare or some sort of public service. Never use to be this way. Use to be a good field to work in as I remember. Made good money once until much of it went to overseas (imports). Nowadays one cannot barely make a living. That and the so called guest worker program which allows employers to pay a lower wage. Over the years I've seen the writting on the walls and prepared for what I've seen coming. Thank goodness I did.
That is a problem that goes across the board. Ag workers are not the only ones eating it, most people without a degree are just screwed in this country. Welcome to a life of serfdom.
We live in a world where everyone blames the poor working man because he is on food stamps and cash/housing assistance. We blame them for having to be on medicaid. The reality is the people they work for should be ponying up. This idea that corporation can hire someone so far below the costs of living, and then dumb the responsability on the government has got to come to an end.
Corporate welfare is a worse problem then individual welfare. It all has got to go, im sick of paying for it.
There is a large difference in the "poor" and "the needy".
Who determines who is which? Government?
Or the families, communities, churches, social groups and local charities?
Why do we fund programs for food and cash to "the poor" when many have other resources such as family to help them?
Why should I pay for the "poor" to eat when they possibly have family to help them?
Corporations do not receive welfare. They do receive too many incentives, tax rebates, credits and tax loop holes that could be easily closed. That is not welfare. The government gives them NO CASH.
Yes corporations do recieve welfare. They recieve tons of it. You strike me as a reasonable fellow so here are a few examples
Food stamps: I got a picture on my phone of frozen lobster at a local dillions. It has a big bright orange sticker that stays 'food stampable'. You think they dont have a high profit margin in stuff like that?? Another food stamp example is most convenience stores. Quick-trips around these parts make a killing off food stamps. How many times have you seen someone ringing up 15 bucks worth of junk food on food stamps? I see it frequently.
Tax incentives: Take the tax incentive a couple years back to buy a car. Thats taxpayer welfare strait to corporate power. You know last year our top three performing corporations profited more money then what all of them paid in taxes? Thats welfare. When government passes a law requiring the public to purchase a good or service, thats welfare. Stimulus bailout are welfare. Federal Reserve operates entirely on welfare, were the government not behind them they would be out of business. Anytime a corporation lobbies the government to gain something and gets it, thats welfare.
Health Care: This one is the worst because it has caused such a huge distortion to the market, and it has such a direct impact on the population. Lets start with big pharma and medicaid. Did you know that most pharmacutical companies operate on a 70+% profit margin? Thats after paying for 'managerical costs' which mean 'executive pay'. How many elderly do you know that are taking LESS then 6 pills a day, all on medicare and medicaid. These companies have the best customer ever, the federal government. They buy the most, pay the most, and never run out of money.
The bottom line is the framing of an argument. Since business ownes the media they have gotten by with a great fallacy. That fallacy is that when a human being recieves government assistance, its welfare. When business recieves government assistance, its a regulation, or a law, or whatever they want to call it. But its all the same thing, and it all comes from the same place.
The American middle class. Maybe thats why the harder you work, the more it feels like your getting nowhere.
