I was in Abha and Asir in 2000. Security was incredible in an effort to keep the Yemen jihadis from cross border attacks. They had moved Saudi villages back from the border 20 kilometers.

I grew up in a town founded by Episcopalians before the revolutionary war. It was "restricted" until the World War II baby boom made selling little houses built on former farmland
very profitable---not all baby boomers were
WASPs. ------But the town still managed to bar
blacks---a kind of "gentleman's agreement"---
As a kid I had no idea why my mom would
sorta randomly announce---"I'll show them---
I'll sell this house to a colored family" The
arrival of her and her five kids in the early
1950s had created a "stir" There were Dutch
and reluctantly accepted Irish people in town--
"Dutch reformed" and "Catholic"---I learned this one----"if you're not Dutch, your're not MUCH"-----which was just about the least offensive of the little jabs thrown around the
