It's inevitable for the middle class to disappear within a capitalistic system, eventually. The chasm between the wealthy and the poor continues to grow more and more unbalanced over time, making the middle class almost indistinguishable from the poor in terms of assets. There is a direct correlation between technological advancement and a diminishing middle class. As entrepreneurs keep building businesses that bypass traditional channels and make things more "convenient" for people, the middle class will continue to shrink. The internet (and smart phones) is actually the biggest threat to the middle class. It's the biggest double edged sword humanity has ever seen, we just don't realize it yet.
Humans have an innate desire for convenience, to make things "easier," to think less and less and do less work, and as long as entrepreneurs continue to exploit this natural tendency, the future looks pretty scary.
