Is nation building progressive or conservative?

Depends on which nation you are building. If it is somebody else's nation, not progressive at all. If it is our own, yes, that is progressive.

In this nation, we have neglected our infrastructure in a manner that borders on insane. From the water systems that our urban areas depend on, to the bridges on our great interstate system, the state of disrepair is a shame to our nation.

We have a grid that is an antique, and wastes huge amounts of energy, energy that we need. It no longer goes to where the energy is at, and is extremely vulneble to natural disasters. Our system of pipelines, oil and gas, has a high percentage of pipes that are currently being ran at one half capacity or less because of age and weakness, and explosians and fatalities because of that seem to be an almost monthly occurance.

We need to be doing some major nation building right here at home.

Well-heeled interests building governments, complete with security forces, on tracts of real estate and calling them nations for the purpose of efficiently extracting as much resources at the highest profit possible has a certain successful history on this planet, but at what cost? How many totalitarian regimes simply took the military from the puppets installed by nation builders?

If 'teaching democracy by setting a good example' is considered Nation Building, I could get behind that.

That is what we were founded to be. A beacon of the democratic process for other nations to aspire to.

Yet today the conservative movement has made voter fraud an issue and wants to restrict the ability to vote in many states.
Stating this is not a strategy to gain power is utter bullshit; there is no evidence to suggest other means cannot be established to prevent fraud. The New Right hopes to disenfranchise citizens who might not vote their way.

Yes dear. Whatever you say. No matter how fucking nonsensical it is.

I would like to think nation building is both progressive and conservative. If we trample the Constitution, then are we too progressive?? Ensuring everyone that is eligible to have ONE vote uses that privilege may be a little too conservative for some.

Why would anyone suggest we allow non-citizens and dead people to vote?? This should not be a partisan issue, oh darn, there's that conservative thing getting in the way again. That durn piece of paper that states that's the way it is.

Seems pretty progressive to me.

It sure as hell isnt the reason we came together for that common defense.

Progressive or conservative, it is a big government function.

A big government function at the behest of whom, exactly?

:eusa_think: Just who would lobby for such an expenditure? Who would gain enough to support a lobbying campaign for activities paid for with American blood and treasure?

FOLLOW THE MONEY.

That's incorrect.

It initially was a progressive idea. You'll find many more liberal presidents in this country trying it.

It was well intended..but wrong.

That is the sad part.

There is unequivcal evidence that the republican party has worked for decades to keep legal American voters from voting so that they can subvert democracy.

Its cold hard court documented fact.

You act blind and think it makes you what?

So TDM and Wry Catcher, why don't you give us your progressive ideas on what needs to be done to keep illegal immigrants, dead people, Mickey Mouse and Goofy from voting??

Instead of *itching about what you perceive as a problem how about you give us your ideas for a solution.

lets all remember what Grover Norquist said about this country.

The right wants this government dead.

They want the power to operate this country by the people DEAD.

They want to hand it to the corporations.

That is why they feel NO QUALMS stripping legal voters of their rights.

In the end only the wealthy will have control

first you must prove that what you claim is a problem.

It is not.

Yep nation building is cool unless you want to nation build America then thats wrong. Apparently, building up other peoples infrastructure is the American way...Building our own is "socialism".

Cons are so backward

I would say expecting a voter to prove they are eligible to vote is pretty darn progressive. No some people want to hold on to old ideas and old ways, especially when it works to their favor.

ONE dead person voting is a problem. Come on TDM, tell me it has never happened.
