your dreams
So we go from having a president who's foreign policy strategy is to bully other nations into submission to a president who's strategy is to be the international community's water carrying bitch.

What ever happened to walk softly and carry a big stick?

One "John Wayne without a brain" President is all we needed to cure us of walking softly and carrying big sticks.

Its either walk softly without a stick or tread heavily with an M1A1

So the solution is one sniveling Woody Allen with no stick?

They dropped the stick in favor of emptying your wallet.

he means that as a result of the great depression we threw the constitution out the window and started letting the government do all sorts of things that our constition never gave them the power to do.

And we are just progressing further down that road of centralized power and away from the origin of our nation having the power spread out amoungst the people.

Wilson cast the die for America-as-global-bully. Political goombahs like FDR, Truman, LBJ and the Bushes merely followed that model.

History didn't begin with the last administration.

Oh, he has a stick, you just can't see it.

You know why?

Obama's working on the strategy, "You will catch more flies with honey than vinegar." The problem is, we taxpayers are running out of honey. I can't speak for others, but flies aren't on my favorites list.

Wilson set the pace which most presidents, with precious few exceptions, have since followed.

I should have been more specific, our involvement in WW1 wasn't constitutional IMO therefore he started the whole "ingore the constitution" thing.

My B :)

Wilson was the first president that advocated "Internationalism" and led to America's global interventionist mindset.

You might recall the isolationists, (another example of the "winners" get to write the history), they were so called because they opposed the internationalists. Wilson was, Harding, Coolidge and Hoover (though to a lesser extent) were not. Roosevelt was, but had to contend with a strong isolationist contingent in the Senate so he could not be as interventionist as he would have liked.

Since Roosevelt essentially outlasted all of his political opponents, there was no going back after he died and Truman (another internationalist. Some might say pragmatist, but i would disagree) completed his term. Upon the re-election of Truman, the die was truly cast. The US was so completely entangled in foreign treaties and agreements like NATO and SEATO and a hundred others that there was no path back to a non-internationalist policy.

Even if there had been, Ike was not one to take it. Ike was a Republican like Colin Powell is, that is to say, not really. Eisenhower spent his life overseas in the Philippines, Europe etc, he did not have a burning desire to take America back to a non-internationalist time. Since then, there has not been a non-internationalist president.

That's the long form of ...."We still haven't recovered from Wilson."
