At midnight local time, Indonesia executed 4 prisoners for drug offenses today. The attached news article provides details. The executions were by firing squad as usual there.
Drug law violations are insidious crimes which addict users to a life of chemical dependency and crime to support their addictions. Detoxification is arduous and extensively time consuming as well as expensive. Relapse is highly likely.
So the argument over whether capital punishment is an appropriate proportional response for drug offenses or not is heated and controversial.
Very few modern nations impose capital punishment for any reason anymore. Indonesia is one of the few that does.
For a proportional crime, such as murder, or mass murder, or murder with special circumstances such as rape, it is much easier to justify execution as an appropriate sentence. In addition, China is known to harvest the organs of execution convicts in order to sustain life for patients with severe medical conditions.
China's policy makes the most sense in view of the life giving properties of donated organs, wherein a convict then pays for his crime of taking a life by providing additional life to recipients of the organs. Other Western, African, and Middle Eastern nations which execute but do not harvest organs are simply wasting the organs. In many cases of course the donor is not fit to donate, such as in the case of AIDS or Hepatitis.
In terms of mode of execution, firing squad is quite rapid and essentially painless. Although the emotional strain upon the soldier squad is high as on any executioner, the method is relatively inexpensive and foolproof.
