Somali pirates hijack oil tanker

I'm up for suggestion. My current idea is for a three pronged offensive.

1. Talk other countries into a greater military role in the area. Hold joint exercises there with anyone you like. Brazil, Argentina, Canada, England, whoever has a Navy.

2. Time to get the U.N. to establish stability and economic opportunity bases on the Somali coast. It will be a form of Nation Building I suppose.

3. Encourage armed escorts for the big slow ships. Let Haliburton or whoever enjoy capitalism on the high seas.

Simple solution is to simply post a carrier group in the area. I'm sure if the politicians stay out of their way that they can correct the situation rather soon.

Hey Dude, your #4 and my #3 are pretty similar!

If the two of us had the same idea it must be a good answer.

I wonder how many millions they made from this deal:

Somali pirates release Greek-owned ship, 21 crew

MANILA, Philippines – Somali pirates have released a Greek-owned ship and its 21 crew members, including 14 Filipinos, after more than a month in captivity, the Philippine government and the ship's owner said Friday.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that its embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, reported that the MV Delvina was heading to Mombasa with its crew, who were safe and in good health.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Ed Malaya said the ship, seized on Nov. 5, was released around 2 a.m. Friday (1 p.m. EST Thursday, 1800 GMT Thursday).

The question should be: Why did the Somali's turn to being pirates?

The answer is: Thousand of ships use the waters off the coast of Somali for the illegal dumping of toxic waste and chemicals. Thus the waters off of Somalia have become an ecological disaster and destroyed the fishing waters. In essence destroying the livelyhood of a large portion of the people.

Also, many nations use huge fishing trawlers to sweep most of the fish from Somali waters. Thus the Somali people are left with very little fish to feed their people.

The real long term solution to the Somali pirate problem: Would be to Police the waters off of the Somali coast and stop illegal toxic dumpimg and the devastating massive fishing by industrial scale fishing trawlers.

But the Western media never addresses this in he news, because so many nations are making vast amounts of money by the illegal dunping of toxic waste and illegal fishing practices.

4. Allow well armed private security outfits to cruise the seas and sell their services.

I just saw a special on that. A private security company is outfitting some vessels with different kinds of defensive equipment, training the crew how to react and manning the vessels. It ain't cheap but the pirates better start looking for other work, it looks effective.

Now I don't know a lot about the waters off the coast of Somalia, But I do know that you cannot destroy the fish with chemicals and then make any money with commercial fishing. To make it simple, you just can't have it both ways. If the toxins killed the fish then you can't go fishing.

Ollie, the dumping destroyed the fish near the shore, where the waste was dumped. The Somalis can't fish farther out because of their small boats, nternational laws, and the presence of larger ship that don't hesitate to run them down.

The History Channel's Shadow Force went to patrol the waters off of Somalia, if I recall.

*correction, they were off he coast of Liberia in that episode

So they can't fish the waters further out but they can raid ships that are out there? Come on now.

I'll buy that their waters were polluted by folks looking to make or save a buck. Gives me two reasons to put armed ships out there. 1 to shoot pirates. 2 to shoot polluters. I understand why both are doing what they're doing and that's about as much tolerance as I have.

Arm the merchant ships, these pirates dont exactly have warships, a few mounted 50 calibres on board would be all thats needed.

We can always rent out our Navy Seals. I'm sure they would appreciate the practice and they could make a few bucks on the side.

I'll second that

This assumes Somalia is a nation, which I think in the modern sense of the word, it is not. It exists more in the biblical era form of a cluster of tribes or societies, but not as a modern nation state.

There is also the issue of Somaliland, which at some point probably needs to become independent.

I see Somalia as a black hole to throw money and troops into, hence, I think the UN should leave it alone.

We could just kill them all, take over, and let any stragglers be slaves. Hell, look at South Africa and Blacks as a race; they're much better off after a few generations under the White Man.
