"One of the many myths that have buried the true history of the Vietnam War is that the anti-war movement was motivated by selfish desire, especially among college students, to avoid the draft (a view that conveniently ignores the movement’s throngs of female participants, whose gender automatically exempted them from the draft).

"Quite to the contrary, students demonstrating against the draft deferment tests were specifically undermining and targeting their own privileges and exemptions, which, as they passionately argued, came at the expense of poor and working class people.

"At Stanford, a number of people actually disrupted the test.

"The young men involved thus proved that their goal was not to avoid the draft but to end it, since they had been explicitly warned that their actions would jeopardize their own deferments..."

"Enter young Mitt Romney, right on cue, waving a sign denouncing the anti-war students. He, like his fellow almost all-male participants in this pro-war demonstration, fervently argued in support of the war and the draft.

"But not, of course, for himself."

Mitt's yet another rich, white draft dodger who thinks he's entitled to be Commander-in-Chief. How many war$ will thi$ one in$tigate?

Can Mitt say M-E-X-I-C-O?

At what?

Romney did dodge the draft.

Here's the bigger scoop. Romney's family never fought to defend this nation. In fact, they LEFT so the men folk could chase after little girls. THEN they left their adopted country to AVOID fighting in any wars there..

Brave bunch.

Might as well be called "Brave Sir Romney".

Romney did dodge the draft.

Lie....
Not exactly:

"One of the very best (ways to dodge the draft) was the ministry.

"In 1966, young men flooded into divinity schools, embarking on careers to be ministers, priests, and rabbis. The Mormons had an even better deal than most religions, because The Church of Latter-Day Saints required each and every one of its young men to become, for at least two years, a 'minister of religion.'

"Thus all Mormon young men could claim deferments as ministers.

"When the inequity of this arrangement became too blatant, the Selective Service entered into an agreement with the LDS that required the church to specify just one 'minister' for each geographical district.

"Since there were relatively few Mormons in Michigan, and Governor George Romney had considerable influence in the church, Mitt quickly received an official appointment as a Mormon 'minister of religion,' consecrated by a draft deferment from the Selective Service.

"So instead of returning to Stanford, Mitt went off to become a Mormon missionary in France, where he would spend the next two and a half years—while Vietnam became a slaughterhouse for the Vietnamese and many Americans drafted to slaughter them."

Do you think Money Mitt went to France in search of some "Freedom Fries" or because he didn't want to be the first one out of the helicopter in 'Nam?

Please, elaborate.

The evidence indicates he and his father took deliberate actions to ensure Mitt never got close to a war that he publicly supported.

He may have dodged the draft but hey, at least he has cool Ronald Reagan hair.

Sidebar: Wouldn't knowing what we know now about Vietnam make the Draft Dodgers smart?

Archie Bunker's take on draft dodgers: "You can't do that! If more people did that then you couldn't get a decent war off the ground!" :D

As a Mormon young adult male he was EXPECTED and encouraged to do a mission. If a Mormon eligible for Mission does not go and has no hardship preventing him his standing in the community and the Church would be lessened.

He is a practicing Mormon. His volunteering for Mission was about as mandatory as it gets. But you spin it otherwise cause well you are an idiot.

How do the freaking hypocrites on the left get to play both sides? If the allegations regarding Romney's draft status are true the left should vote for him in a heart beat. Now the party of no family values has retired pornographer Larry Flynt offering a reward for Romney's tax returns. The world is upside down in the liberal mind.

mitt didn't dodge the draft

stop making the left look stupid

Didn't he say something like he was to busy to join the military or something to that affect? Why didn't ANY of his many boys join?

so mormons weren't expected to serve during Vietnam? I am sure there Re lots of poor people back then who had no idea!

I don't wanna paint with too broad of a brush; but we knew that lies, distortions and diversions would be the left's strategy to get Obama re-elected. We see this crap and just think uh-huh; we're supposed to care about this crap relative to the failure that is Obama?

Church missions weren't the only exemptions. People who were attending college were also granted exemptions. It was that easy to "dodge the draft."

The first thing the peanut man did when he was elected was to pardon the little army of criminals who escaped to Canada to avoid the draft and the left celebrated the gesture. Back in the 90's the left supported candidate who could have been prosecuted as a draft dodger. Today it seems the left wants to reverse it's agenda and start rounding everyone who didn't get drafted when they were eligible. The world is upside down in the liberal mind.

If someone opposed the US invasion and occupation of South Vietnam on moral grounds and either left the country or went to prison in support of his beliefs, he would get my vote next November.

If a rich, white war-whore who publicly supported the US occupation didn't volunteer to serve in the occupation forces, I would suspect he's a coward.

If the same rich war-whore used his father's political influence obtain a French vacation instead of a ticket to the former French colony, I would suspect he's also a hypocrite.

Another rich, white war-whore who's also a coward and a hypocrite occupying the White House might be the last nail in this republic's coffin.
