Yes, she used her own email server, and everyone in government knew it, and sent her emails to it, including the president.... at the time she created her system, near no one thought twice about it...(that wasn't an IT expert or in one of the Intelligence agencies)...All senators and Congressmen were using limited Blackberry phones for goodness sake, and were clueless on the brand new, emerging iPhone...which in just a couple of years, changed the World.

You likely are not considering how things really were back then, with technology...many older generations really did initially, have a hard time with it.

It was arrogant of her, to set up her own server, so she could keep her personal life separated from government or basically to keep her private life private, and from the republican congress critters out to get her and out to add to her husband's republican "gates" investigations.... with her.

All of the govt emails she had, were copied to a disk and turned over to the State Dept, by her lawyer. The State dept went through them and sorted them for any subpoena requests, and then gave them to the National Archives for their records and access for FOIA requests.

Initially, she did not understand why the govt wouldn't already have most all of the govt related emails on her server because they always included another govt employee who would have turned their records over. She believed the govt could just do a search query for her name, or email address, and the Archives could just pull them all up....

But our govt email system was not that sophisticated and requires each employee to keep their own files of govt communications and turn them over, so the Archives have them grouped and easier to search and fill FOIA requests under this antiquated system.

What she did with establishing her own server, was arrogant and self serving and a number of other things, but not illegal at the time when created... at least, she was advised such.
