Has Gifford's shooting warranted all of this?

The Congress is shutting down business for a week. There is talk of funding security for Congress when they are talking to their constituents. We have to remember this was a deranged individual who got a gun and shot this Congresswoman.

It is not an everyday happening, matter of fact it has been decades since it has happened before. Does it warrant stopping business in Congress and funding security people at every town talk?

These facts are irrelevant to the hatred of the liberals. Their mission is to destroy Palin and the Republicans. Bear that in mind.

It was a deranged individual. But yes, while shutting down Congress seems to be over the top I do think some sort of security at public events would be appropriate. Unfortunately, there are more deranged individuals out there - and we've all heard of copycat syndrome.

You make good points. Thank you for your response.

When it comes to protecting themselves, making themselves rich, nothing is too much.

Its a shame they will not do anything to end the rape of children. Like the death penalty for all child rapist.

Should the cost of this new security come out of their budget or should their be new funding for it?

yes

I think it is a wise decision. I don't think it's so much about this situation-but more about preventing where an incident like this can lead to. It gives some time for things to simmer down, before a copy-cat, or retaliation occurs-which would bring things to a much worse level. They're still going to vote on these issues, and still going to be meeting, but like I said in order to prevent things from getting too nutty-they can wait a week to vote on.

If there were evidence of a group conspiracy to take out more members of Congress, then it would be reasonable to stop BAU and focus on the security issues.

But there isn't. This was the one act of a very disturbed and ideologically incoherent whackjob.

While I agree, I think there are plenty of whackos out there who could potential follow in suit after this to shut down congress for a week.

The fucking politicians in DC will use this as an excuse to use more of our money for themselves.

If we're talking about some level of security at public events, I don't see it as money for themselves alone. They even have a couple of cops hanging out at high school football games out here in the sticks, surely paying the OT for a uniform or two at public events involving a political figure isn't too much to ask.

Now, something like a personal security detail? Uh, no. Reasonable, not paranoid.

I agree.

If they are going to at an event extra security can be arranged.

Personal security such as the POTUS has. Nope.

What would be the difference? If it came out of their budget they'd just raise it enough to cover it (or, likely even more).

Very much so.

I'm ok with it, if they offer the same protection for other events besides just political ones. Are we protecting life or are we protecting just the politician's sorry ass?

Unfortunately, as long as guns are readily available to every "wingnut" in the America, there is no fool-proof way of protecting presidents and politicians.

Is it just a matter of coincident that the Canada's "wingnuts" (a country that shares 1000's of miles of border with the US and has stronger gun legislation) don't have a history of shooting their politicians?

The cost should be born personally out of the pockets of Congress, Congress has spent Billions of Dollars on security. This is a complete failure of Congress, not the current Congress but of the Congress ever since the Kennedy assassination.

The Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was the Arizona Governor while this kid grew up, Just a thought.
