Has Gifford's shooting warranted all of this?

I'm ok with it, if they offer the same protection for other events besides just political ones. Are we protecting life or are we protecting just the politician's sorry ass?

I see your point, and if it was just to protect the politicians-I'd agree 100%. But when there's a public shooting like this-it puts everybody at risk, including the taxpaying public who is in attendance. More people were shot in Arizona than just Giffords.
 
I don't see anything wrong with congressmen, women adding a couple of local policeman for a security detail when they mingle with the public. I do not agree with a secret service detail though.

This is what you get when you live in a reactive society as opposed to proactive. Same reason why we have to take our shoes off at the airport, etc...
