ST. LOUIS -- A registered sex offender who shot himself as officers approached him for questioning about the disappearance of 4-year-old northeast Missouri girl was almost certainly the man who took her, police said Thursday.

Authorities on Thursday said 38-year-old Paul S. Smith of Hawk Point, Mo., was the suspect in the Monday abduction of Alisa Meier, who was found alive and unharmed the following evening. Smith died late Wednesday at a St. Charles hospital.

"It's over," St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch said at a news conference. "There's no reason to believe at this point that anyone else was involved."

Smith was convicted in 1995 of sodomy in a case involving a 10-year-old boy, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol's registry of sex offenders. He served about 11 years in prison.

Its not quite the justice i would hand out to them. After I would be done with them they would be praying for death. But yes it is more cost effective.

I saw an old Tarzan movie when I was a kid and they killed people by having elephants step on them. That might work too...

Another good thing about this, the little girl (and her parents) may be able to sleep at night knowing that perv is dead.

Yes EZ, and maybe some of these other parents can get some closure too even if the news is bad.

Fitch said law officers continue to investigate Smith's background and whether he may have been involved in other unsolved missing child cases. Among them is the case of Bianca Piper, a 13-year-old girl who went missing from her home near Foley, Mo., in 2005. Foley and Louisiana are both situated along Missouri Route 79, and are about 25 miles apart.

Ahh yes, the usual attempt by the police to clear old cases, blame it on some dead guy. Much easier then admitting they have no clue.

You obviously know nothing about this case do you? All the evidence pointed to this guy. When the cops came to pay him a visit, he shot himself. Why would an innocent man do that?

In THIS case yes, in the others one must assume not since they are OLD cases and he was never arrested. You may try reading things for content.

What the hell are you talking about? The OP is about the justice of the guy shooting himself when approached about the abducted girl. Old cases (even though mentioned in the article) really have nothing to do with what happened. The asshole messed with a kid and spent 11 years in prison. He gets out and abducts a 4 year old girl. The cops came to see the whackjob and he shoots himself because he knows he is guilty and knows where he will go and what will happen to him. If only more vermin like him would do society a favor and off themselves.
