Why is Halloween so popular in America?

For that matter, why has there been an explosion of comic book adapted films in Hollywood?

When we wear masks/costumes, we cater to our fantasies/daydreams about identity change, heroism/vigilantism, and physical/magical transformation.

Comic book characters make great Halloween costumes.

These days, we notice numerous images of ISIS terrorists in head-masks carrying weapons, and their intentions are not simply Halloween-esque.

Should Americans counter such behaviors with multiculturalism-sarcasm images of their own?

BATMAN: Are you excited for Halloween this year?
CITIZEN: I'm American so of course!
BATMAN: What are you going to dress up as?
CITIZEN: I'm going to fashion my own 'sarcastic vigilante' outfit!
BATMAN: Why is your vigilante-costume 'sarcastic'?
CITIZEN: Vigilantes are just like ISIS terrorists --- psychotic!
BATMAN: Do you think I'm psychotic?
CITIZEN: Well, you're not exactly...normal!
BATMAN: I defend democratic values in America.
CITIZEN: Americans offer lousy immigration photojournalism (hence my anti-American costume)!
