Dem student loan bill fails | TheHill

Senate Republicans blocked consideration of a bill that would allow people to refinance their student loan debt in a 56-38 vote on Wednesday.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) authored S. 2432, the Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act, which would allow more than 25 million people to refinance their student loans to today’s lower interest rates of less than 4 percent.

Democrats have been pushing their “fair shot” agenda ahead of the November elections by holding votes on student loans, raising the minimum wage and ensuring women have equal pay for equal work — but Republicans have blocked all of legislative measures.

Republicans could do something to help the middle class. Then again, maybe not.

Stay poor and indebted, vote Democrat! When you're not unemployed. we'll get you a minimum wage job!

Why would anyone vote AGAINST lowering the interest payment? They are the same ones who will say "you don't need a college education to be successful" which is a way of enticing people to work for low wages. Truth be told a college degree is the only way to avoid working for a lousy wage for a lousy boss for a lousy company your whole life.

Wrong.

Price gouging at colleges, like the one at which granny Warren slacked off for decades, is what is responsible for the crushing debt.

If only progressives were as committed to demanding maximum wages for overpaid professors, as they seem to be to minimum wages for low skilled employees.

I know. Education is so stupid. Why would anyone go to college? Right?

Which is totally against the current Republican philosophy of "Prosperity through lower wages". The Republicans on this site believe college means drinking, sex, and indoctrination. They don't seem to understand why GOP governors like Rick Perry go to Blue States begging for skilled workers. You don't see anyone from California and New York going to Texas begging for skilled workers.

It's a simple matter of contract law. A freaking first year law student will tell you that the president has no jurisdiction over student loans and neither does congress. It's just another example of a failed administration pandering to it's decreasing base.

It's educational share-cropping.

But then our educators can't create a National Recommended Reading List to make education cheap.

No. The question is why would you take out loans you can't afford?

College isn't for everybody. Many people take out loans that they can't afford when they have much cheaper options (community colleges for 2 years then transferring to a 4-year school). At school we hammer college into their heads...but there's nothing wrong with learning a trade and becoming an electrician, a plumber, a mechanic, etc.
