Go to war have your credit ruined

Former Army Specialist Rodriguez started getting bills for $700 for lost or damaged government property this summer. Although he was discharged some four years ago, bills recently arrived demanding payment, but giving no details on what or why -- nor do they offer a way to dispute the charges.

"For doing my job you're going to bill me?" Rodriguez said.

And he's not alone. A 2006 government report found more than 1,000 soldiers being billed a total of $1.5 million. And while fighting overseas put their lives on the line, this battle on paper could cost them their future by ruining their credit. Rodriguez will be reported to credit agencies next month.

That's special. If equipment is destroyed due to negligence or misuse, the individual servicemember can be charged for it's cost. Been that way for years. Nice to see you're suddenly concerned.

Nice. Very compassionate of you.

These guys weren't chilling out at an army base in Hawaii.

They were serving in a war zone in Iraq.

So you know these charges resulted from service in Iraq? The equipment was lost or broken in Iraq? You must be psychic because the article does not say.

Tell use what was lost or broken and where.

You guys are hoot and clueless!

The defense of our country is different.

What the hell do we pay taxes for? We spend billions of dollars on Defense and yet our soldiers are charged for doing their duty and being soldiers. How dare they undermine our soldiers like this? They serve their country, and then when they get home and try to continue with their lives they receive a bill from the government. It should be the other way around.

Our mistake: we thought you guys were into "supporting the troops."

Thanks for the post, TM. :clap2:

Of course YOU would try to politicize this. Supporting the troops has nothign to do with holding them accountable for destruction of Gov't property due to negligence or misuse.

Just another attempted spin by people like you and TM. If you pull your heads out of your asses, there's oxygen OUT HERE.

I need more information here.

The fact that CHUCK SCHUMER is quoted as being "outraged" by this makes me very, very skeptical. Anything he's outraged by, I'm for. Double.

You are an idiot. Let me put it this way for you: LET'S HOLD THOSE WHOSE HEADS COULD HAVE BEEN BLOWN OFF WHILE FIGHTING FOR THEIR COUNTRY ACCOUNTABLE FOR DESTRUCTION OF GOV'T PROPERTY DUE TO NEGLIGENCE OR MISUSE.

This has everything to do with supporting the troops and I am outraged that you would suggest otherwise you piece of shit. It is no wonder that they receive these bills because people like you send them. Whose next? Will you send someone who lost their legs in Iraq a bill for their negiligence in the destruction of Gov't property. They joined the military to defend their country only to be stabbed in the back by pieces of shit like you. It doesn't shock me that evil bastards like you are also in the military because they can be found anywhere. I suggest you take your damn head out of your ass motherfucker and get a damn clue. How dare you try to make this into an issue of you sick bastards not betraying our soldiers and negilgence on the part of our brave men and women in uniform. How dare you suggest that you aren't a traitor for choosing to betray them as you have. You dare to suggest that our troops should pay for something that was lost or destroyed in their fighting a war that they often had no say in. It is people like you who should get a bill from these soldiers and their families for their sacrifices. May God damn your kind to hell where you belong.

Simple bullshit. The military has always charged for lost or destroyed equipment, UNLESS you can show it was not your fault.

Now the point I take on THIS particular claim is the statement that the military is NOT providing information on WHY the charges are submitted and why so late. Normally you get charged when it comes time to turn in said equipment, meaning either when you leave a unit or when you process out.

I suspect some numnuts in an office somewhere got reamed by some congressional moron and over reacted.

OR, the story is a pure fabrication, or lacks actual details of why and what for the charges are being made.

That Schumer is involved leads me to believe the latter not the former, though it still could be a screw up by the military. The military is a huge organization and is hide bound and can be really stupid on some issues.

I had to fight for some of my Marines in peace time because they were heat casualties, passed out and had their gear removed while unconcious, then stolen or lost. Some supply pud wanted to charge them for it. Sometimes I won, sometimes I lost.

I also had Marines that sold their gear cause they wanted to go get drunk. And then tried to claim they had it stolen somehow. The somehow always tripped them up though. Ohh and by the way, depending on how it was stolen, you can still be liable, its YOUR job to safe guard your equipment.

The problem is you have a lot of Military leaders and supply people that do not understand the concept of "take care of your troops" they see regulations as black and white and no in betweens. They have a regulation that says failure to turn in equipment means the member pays, and can't seem to read a little farther down the reg where it states what circumstances do NOT require payment.

THIS story though has to many blank areas to know whats really going on.

A few opinions of mine

#1 I dont know what tm political motives are but they are wholy irrelevant to this thread.

#2 I agree with tm and edward, it is a flawed, un-fair, and immoral policy to say, thank you for fighting for our country, and since something broke, (which may or may not be their fault, pay up, we have tax payers for a reason, and all military deserve a raise, and an exemption from this assinine policy)

#3 It is not who speaks that is important, nor whether you agree. The real issue I believe is, is it the truth, the 100% truth

2 does not apply since the story has no real information on what and where the supposed equipment was lost or destroyed.

I know this is gonna be shocking, But i agree with edward, it is wrong to question the patriotism of anyone who simplies asks, challenges, or doesnt agree with the war, or any war, or a policy or any policy. Should democrats be able to call republicans racist for not supporting something, well everytime, one of us, calls the democrats a traitor or anti-american, for not agreeing with us, or supporting and issue or policy, we are acting badly. And acting badly should not be supported or tolerated, regardless of ones political beliefs. I think its a cheap shot, to call someone an anti-american, and/or traitor, unless they are actually doing so, and we can debate what that is, i think we need more common sense , and lets emotion on this issue of the iraq war, and to be frank, giving our soldiers a bill for anything, during any way is wrong. They signed up voluntarily, and they deserve a raise, free health care, and a better health care system then the va, Let me be clear, im not saying edward should use the language he used, but i can see how you provoked him, and how i might feel the same way as him, this is nothing personal, I have been guilty of calling people anti-american, and i admit, i was an asshole for that, and will never do it again, unless i can prove, someone is actually doing so, not just cause i feel they are.

Again, we have a difference of opinion here, and thats ok. I simply disagree with you calling anti-american or insinuating it. I think its fair for him or anyone of any political party to look at this or any issue and say do i agree or not first, not, well he is a liberal, so he is the enemy. I disagree with democrats on many things, but you know who is my main enemy first and foremost alqueda, both parties must stop name calling, especially when the names are not true, we need to take responsibility for our bad behavior, if we are going to point out others bad behaviour, and we need to stop excusing bad behaviour by pointing out others bad behavior.
