Sun, Oct 06, 2013 - A Japanese study is claiming that toxic air pollution from China is to blame for high mercury levels atop the country’s beloved Mount Fuji.

The research will likely do little to help simmering hostilities between the Asian giants, a relationship marred by historical animosities and territorial disputes. “Whenever readings were high, winds were blowing from the continent [China],” said Osamu Nagafuchi, the lead scientist on the study, on Thursday. Fuji was chosen “because it’s a place unaffected by urban pollution,” said Nagafuchi, an environmental science professor at the University of Shiga Prefecture.

Pollution levels on Mount Fuji have been monitored annually since 2007, he said, adding the decision to carry out the study on the 3,776m peak had nothing to do with it being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site earlier this year. The UNESCO designation led to a surge in visitors to the iconic peak, which figures heavily in Japanese art and literature. Mercury levels near the top of peak were up to double the levels found in other places free of heavy pollution, according to the survey conducted in August with non-profit group Valid Utilization of Mt Fuji Weather Station.


The levels were as high as 2.8 nanograms of mercury in one cubic meter of air. That is above normally detected levels of about 1.0 to 1.5 nanograms, but still below the 40 nanogram government threshold for posing risks to human health. A nanogram is one billionth of a gram. The higher-than-expected readings are likely due to Chinese factories burning coal, which releases mercury and arsenic, which also had elevated readings, Nagafuchi said.

Sorry, but crap from China is gonna spill over to Japan, and the crap from Japan has already made it's way to California and the West Coast.

We all live here, why can't we all clean it up?

Part of the problem here is the AlexJones phoney reporter in the video..

THere MAY BE a spread of a GMO product --- but it's probably not as widespread or serious as the claim here asserts..

Monsanto GMO Wheat Lawsuit: Farmer Tom Stahl And Advocacy Group Sue Seed Giant

The suit follows a similar action filed Monday by a Kansas wheat farmer, alleging that he and other
growers have been hurt financially by the discovery of an unapproved biotech wheat that Monsanto
said it stopped testing and shelved nine years ago.

The wheat was developed by Monsanto to withstand treatments of its Roundup weed killer, but the
firm never commercialized the product because of widespread industry opposition. International
buyers threatened to boycott U.S. wheat if the biotech wheat was introduced to the marketplace.
Monsanto said in 2004 that it would end efforts to commercialize the "Roundup Ready" wheat.

This week, Monsanto said that in ending its field testing, the company instructed test participants
to destroy the GMO wheat or ship it to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's seed storage facility
in Colorado. Company officials have said they have no idea how their biotech wheat could be growing
in Oregon.

The initial testing was ALLOWED by the regulators with conditions put on the farmers to obey the rules of the testing. Seems like the follow-thru just didn't happen..

To be really concerned -- I need an accurate accounting of the actual CURRENT confirmations of this strain.. And more serious follow-thru on the part of the govt and industry when they conduct these trials. NONE of these tests should be done on commercial farmland until approval...
