Germany’s main Protestant body distanced itself from the anti-Semitism of its founder, Martin Luther, and pledged to confront the dark side of its roots.

In a unanimous decision Wednesday by its 120 members, the EKD Synod, the decision making body of the Evangelical Church in Germany, renounced the 16th century theologian’s calls to persecute and banish Jews. Luther had wanted Jews disenfranchised and expelled from Germany.

“We cannot ignore this history of guilt,” given the approaching 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, the statement read. The EKD, an umbrella body for German Lutheran, Reformed and United churches, will mark its Jubilee in 2017.

Good for them.

Western European Christian churches are all in crisis. Nobody believes any of their stuff any more, and the only people going to church in Germany are white-haired old farts, young kids and their mothers, and American tourists. It is truly depressing going into these great churches and cathedrals for services, and seeing crowds that could easily be accommodated in a small chapel.

Martin Luther knew almost 500 years ago that the Juden were going to be nothing but trouble for Europe in the future.

The people should have listened to him and acted on his recommendations ......

Martin Luther was just a product of his times, the same as the rest of us. He thought Jews were second class because everyone else in Europe thought the same thing. 500 years from now, which of our deeply held moral positions will be denounced as a product of a less enlightened time?
