The army is a HUGE position of power. It needs to be representative of the people, otherwise it might look suspicious.

If you hire the best skin color or gender or sexuality then you're not getting the best people.

If this truly was a fair and equal country everyone would be picked because of their skills, knowledge, education, personality and level of ambition. That is truly fair and equal. And if they all happened to be white or Asian then no one would say a thing.

When you hire based on diversity you're not getting the best people and you're in fact being a racist, sexist or whatever because you have chosen to exclude people based on ineffectual qualifiers like skin color.

I am embarrassed I was ever in what passes for our military these days.

You may be right. However, we are losing our competitive advantage to other nations now. The costs of anything infrastructure is massive and getting higher. Space, defense, airlines, domestic made heavy infrastructure products and more.

There were blacks, and they were in all-black battalions. For example, I'm sure you've heard of the blacks who flew P51 fighter escort for out bombers. All-black squadron.
