Gadhafi is captured, Libya official claims
Unconfirmed reports say ousted dictator has died from his wounds
Ousted dictator Moammar Gadhafi has been captured or killed after the apparent fall of his hometown of Sirte, according to reports out of Libya. The AFP news agency provided a photograph that appeared to show a wounded or dead Gadhafi. National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid told Reuters that Gadhafi has been wounded in both legs in Sirte. Reuters later reported that Gadhafi had died of his wounds, citing a senior NTC military official. "He was also hit in his head," the official said. "There was a lot of firing against his group and he died."

There was no independent confirmation of Gadhafi's death. Gadhafi was trying to flee in a convoy which NATO warplanes attacked, Majid said. Majid said NATO warplanes struck the convoy and hit four cars as it headed west. The head of Gadhafi's armed forces, Abu Bakr Younus Jabr, was killed during the capture of the Libyan ex-leader, he added, and Ahmed Ibrahim, a cousin and adviser of Gadhafi, was captured. A Libyan government fighter gave an apparently different account of Gadhafi's capture. The unnamed fighter claimed Gadhafi was hiding in a hole, shouting, "Don't shoot, don't shoot."

The spokesman for Libya's transitional government, Jalal al-Gallal, and its military spokesman, Abdul-Rahman Busin, said the reports have not been confirmed. Repeated past reports of Gadhafi family deaths or captures have later proved incorrect. The U.S. State Department and NATO also said they could not confirm the reports. "We are checking and assessing the situation,"' a NATO official said. "Clearly these are very significant developments, which will take time to confirm. If it is true, then this is truly a historic day for the people of Libya.''
