gm ...not so good...

so the reaction ... the uaw rejects its new contract with ford and threatens strike .....

if i was ford .... i would just leave and focus on foreign markets .....

They are now the only American car manufacturer from whom I would currently consider buying a car. That's saying something.

They did not make "billions."

They posted a third quarter profit in the 900 million range.

This after being pronounced dead by some alarmist pundits, because they had been posting losses in the range of 100-200 million while GM and Chrysler were still posting billions in the red. And still are.

Starting back in 2004, Ford was ahead of the curve and started making hard choices. Thru this they were able to not need any taxpayer bailout funds, and are now looking pretty damn strong for the future.

Ford is making a great comeback. They had some hard times, they made changes and adjustments, and the market rewarded them. Proof positive that combining enlightened self interest and capitalism is a fantastic combo. Bravo to FORD!

GM and Chrysler, by contrast, are worthless "*zombie" companies that are now on government welfare. They no longer need to worry about improving their product line, making innovations, or increasing efficiency. They merely need to continue to pay their Union employees that are voting (D), and tow the line by offering cars that are Politically Correct, but unsellable. The US Taxpayer will foot the bill for the rest for as long as it takes. This is "Change you can believe in". You might as well just SHRED the constitution....

Looks like it was a Billion!! From Morningstar:

Ford is enjoying tremendous retail market share gains in North America as a result of its not needing a bailout like GM and Chrysler. The major positive item from this quarter is that the quarterly profit actually came from the auto and financing operations rather than a large one-time gain like early debt retirement as in prior quarters this year. The company reported pretax operating profit of $1.1 billion, its first such profit since the first quarter of 2008. Even North America posted a $357 million pretax operating profit, its first such profit since the first quarter of 2005. Management also raised its outlook for 2011 on a pretax basis excluding special items to "solidly profitable" from "break-even or better."

Yet we all paid for failed businesses and they still failed.

What a freaking joke. Those who supported it will never admit they were duped, though.

Ford cut 987 million dollars in expense. Those were jobs. They are not turning a profit.

Those were people who made too damn much money for what they were doing in the first place. Eliminate the emotional aspect from it. They are now turning a profit from eliminating the useless jobs. The unions fleeced GM and Chrysler, now they are looking to do the same to Ford. Hopefully Ford will pull an AK Steel move and lock them out before they can strike.

That's short of a billion, and miles off of "billions."

No shit.

All the carmakers cut jobs.

All of the gov't run-automakers didn't make a profit. The one major US automaker that did turn a profit didn't hop on the stimulus train, and as legally oppositional to Obamaauto as possible, continued to heavily market PICKUPS & worked on producing gas guzzling sports cars.
It doesn't take a genius to figure out that shit.

"The Porsche 911 Sports car features enough room for 4 passengers, Manual transmission options, engine choices of H6, and All Wheel Drive drivetrains. Find other information on this model like photos, specs, rebates & incentives, crash test ratings and safety facts, available submodels that include the Porsche 911 Carrera, Turbo, and Porsche GT3, basic warranty details, EPA fuel economy rating and gas mileage of 13 miles per gallon.."

....

Ford did not make a profit. They are a ponzi scheme that can not keep it up for much longer. They continue to list sale of stock as revenue and are cutting employees to the tune of almost a Billion dollars. It is all so much nonsense for the fools who can not read a balance sheet.

Ford should begin opening plants in right to work state and make it clear why.

Didn't Gm post a 5% increase in Profit which would have been 11 % if they had already dropped such brands as Saturn and Hummer?

When is a profit NOT a profit. That is when your actual expenses exceed your actual revenue. That is the case with all three American car companies.

The Ford Motor Company posted a third-quarter profit of almost $1 billion US. The U.S. automaker said Monday it expects to be "solidly profitable" in 2011. Meanwhile, General Motors announced its first monthly increase in US sales in almost two years. The news is triggereing hopes that the U.S. auto industry will recover.
