Look at NASA. The government funded tons of impractical shit there that couldn't possibly have turned a profit... and the result was the most rapid technological advancement in human history. Government funding can go a long way.

Obama's gutting of NASA is something that I'll always hold against him.

What do wars have to do with it....the defense department does way more R&D without wars. noone mentioned wars just to spike R&D

Actually, government funds PRIVATE companies to do the R&D in the Defense industry.

Government itself rarely ever does the actual research....

There is something to be said about federal funding of the right projects.....the problem is....government funds 98% of the wrong stuff....imagine what would happen to improve the lives of every human if we didn't have to waste so much money on providing for adults who should have learned to have provided for themselves.

Just to be clear -- are you saying we should or should not increase DOD funding in order to hand over
more of our hard earned tax dollars to "PRIVATE" companies, so private companies can drill ("waste") a bunch-o-dry wells before getting a lucky hit then-----then hand over the ROI to private investors?
And/or, are you saying private prosthesis companies should know beforehand which research will produce successful development?
And/or, are you saying "we [you] like defense spending" that is unsuccessful 98% of the time?

Interestingly enough, government funded research has now invented prostheses that are so good that a Boston bomb victim like Adrianne Haslet has the opportunity to 'choose' a prosthesis over her natural foot and ankle.

Republican preference for cutting taxes would stop the research that is helping our wounded fighters and victims of terrorism.
