A Trump administration policy of separating children from their parents on the U.S. border has prompted a crescendo of criticism among religious leaders.

They span different faiths, denominations and ages. Some of them have also helped the president gain support for his base.

About 11,000 children are in shelters, according to the Office of Refugee Resettlement. Nearly 2,000 children were removed from the care of their parents and taken into federal custody between April 19 and May 31, an immigration official said Friday.

That practice effectively "weaponizes" children, Archbishop of Miami Thomas Wenski told NPR's Weekend Edition on Saturday. "Basically the administration has, in deciding to separate children from their parents, [tried] to weaponize children, using them as a leverage against the parents applying for their asylum applications."

He said that border agents and administration should "use their conscience," while policymakers should do some "soul searching."

Evangelical leader Franklin Graham, son of "America's pastor" Billy Graham and a prominent Trump supporter, told the Christian Broadcasting Network on Tuesday, "It's disgraceful, and it's terrible to see families ripped apart and I don't support that one bit."​

“Any government that uses Romans 13 to silence ethical objections has already realized it does not stand on Scriptural or moral high grounds,” said Wes Faulk, a Southern Baptist pastor from Vidalia, La. “I really think what Sessions said is more pandering and trying to use the Bible to influence Christians than using the Bible to guide his own decision.”

“The Bible isn’t supposed to be a weapon,” said Scott Mayer, the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth. “It’s ultimately about God’s love.”

Amy Joy Ickes, a nondenominational Christian Bible teacher living in San Antonio, said Sessions broke the first rule of Bible study: He took a verse out of its context.

“You can literally make the Bible say anything you want it to say by pulling out the right verses,” she said. “That’s the difficult part of the Bible but also, from Satan’s side of it, the beauty of the Bible.”​

"As evangelical Christians guided by the Bible, one of our core convictions is that God has established the family as the fundamental building block of society. The state should separate families only in the rarest of instances,” Russell Moore, President of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, and other evangelical leaders wrote in a group letter to the White House.

The letter, also signed by the National Association of Evangelicals, Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and others, went on to call the “traumatic effects” of separation potentially “devastating,” “long-lasting,” and “of utmost concern.”

Representatives of other large churches and religious organization, including the US Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), United Methodist Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Islamic Society of North America and Union for Reform Judaism, released a joint statement as well.

“We affirm the family as a foundational societal structure to support human community and understand the household as an estate blessed by God,” they wrote. “The security of the family provides critical mental, physical and emotional support to the development and well-being of children.”​
